Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

HelPoemer

Card Number - PGD-058

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst.  3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 08.18.03

SandTrap Well, I finally got off my lazy @$$ and I guess I'll start doing CotD again. But it's so easy just to be lazy...sigh...

HelPoemer
PGD-058-Ultra Rare
Dark/Fiend/5/2000/1400
Effect: When this card has been sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle, this card’s effect is activated. As long as this card exists in the Graveyard, your opponent discards 1 card randomly from his/her hand at the end of his/her Battle Phase. Neither player can Special Summon this card from the Graveyard.

Eeww...this card is weird and too hard too pull off. It reminds me of one of those movies where the hero has to dodge a ton of bullets, use a pistol to kill a guy 1000 meters away, all while explosions are going off all around him, and then he jumps through a window and lands on a bunch of pillows because a pillow-carrying truck that _just_ crashed, and with the attractive heroine who _happened_ to land on the same pile of pillows.

What I'm trying to say that getting the effect off is really hard and it's up to the opponent as well. First, it has to die in battle, so unless you play to summon this guy and slam it into a Jinzo, good luck getting it to die in battle. "A tributed, set monster...should I attack it or use Rai/Dark Hole/Exiled Force/etc, HMMMMMMM!?!"

But let's say you have Helpoemer die in battle. That's only half the trouble. The discarding only takes place at the end of the Battle Phase, meaning that it depends on the opponent as to when the effect takes place. This is ridiculously easy to avoid. Hand count will probably be 1-3 cards by mid- to late-game, so set the m/t, attack, and discard the only card in your hand, Sinister Serpent. That's how easy it is to avoid Helpoemer. So even after all the trouble of bringing it out, it still won't work effectively if the player is smart.

Rating: 2/5. Don't use this card, just don't. If you want to, then go for it. Maybe if you remove Sinister with Kycoo or something, it may work, but then the opponent will just wait for Rai/DH/HFD/HS/MST with a huge force and win anyways ;). Then again, if I see this being used, I'll side deck 3 Electric Snake and let you take them away ;)
DuelMonster Monday - HelPoemer:

First off I would like to say I picked only all-new evilish type cards this week for my Week Of Darkness, and yes I know it may sound corny but I thought it would be fun. I picked an arrangement of Monster Magic and Traps that lean more towards the dark side of the Yu-Gi-Force and hopefully you will learn something as I usually do when researching for card reviews.

HelPoemer has one of the evilest effects in this game, if you can get his effect to properly activate and protect him from being removed or negated. I say this because there are several things that can get in the way of his effect activating right, like if HelPoemer is destroyed via card effect like Mirror Force, TttD, Raigeki, Raigeki Break, Exiled Force and such, he won't activate because it's not considered battle damage. Also if he's destroyed by Lesser Fiend or while Banisher Of The Light is out he won't even make it to the Graveyard, and if the opponent has a Ha-Des out HelPoemers effect gets negated when he's destroyed.

His not being able to be reborned is good and bad in some ways... Good because your opponent can't Monster Reborn him to stop the effect, and bad because if he ends up being improperly sent to the Graveyard you don't get a second chance (except maybe with Pharaoh's Treasure) to get him destroyed in battle. The best and only way I can think to protect him while he's in the Graveyard from cards like Soul Release, Disappear and Kycoo is by using a Kycoo since he prevent your opponent from removing your cards in the Graveyard. I know not many people besides myself play Mask Of Restrict, but MoR will make it tough for your opponent (and yourself) to summon HelPoemer to begin with, but a simple MST resolves that problem.

Getting him destroyed in battle may or may not be tough depending on the current field setup. Most likely your opponent isn't going to want to attack him, their probably going to wait till they pull a Mirror Force, Raigeki or whatever, but with only 2000 ATK you can run him into your opponents Jinzo or another higher ATK monster they may have out, but best bet would be to clear their M/T zone before attempting a suicide run.

Now as for his effect, forcing your opponent to randomly discard 1 card at the end of their Battle Phase is a bit different than most continuous 1-per-turn effects. Most take place in the Standby Phase or the End Phase, but this may force your opponent to choose to skip their Battle Phase if they are holding important cards. Of course if they are holding good M/T they can set them before entering battle but it still can leave Monsters vulnerable since summoning multiples in a turn is tricky. It's very lethal against Exodia and can be used in more than just Hand Disruption Decks, but still really focuses more toward Hand Disruption themes.

I personally love this card but don't play it at the moment, it was the first holo I pulled from PGD and won't trade it for anything, well almost anything. With HelPoemer being a poet from hell or having poems about hell, he will put you through hell if your opponent manages to get 3 active ones going and you don't play any Soul Releases or Kycoos, so it's best to be prepared if using or going up against this guy.

Vodkam Monday 08/18/03: Helpoemer

Dark/Fiend
Effect Monster

When this card has been sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle, this card's effect is activated. Neither player can Special Summon this card from the Graveyard.

One of the most highly anticipated cards in Pharaonic Guardian, it didn't take long for most people to figure out that this card isn't as good as it sounds.

What can you say? Making your opponent discard every turn he/she conducts a battle phase is a killer effect. Yes, the battle phase is optional. This can wipe out your opponent's hand in a matter of 2 or 3 turns in which case, they're easy pickins. His 2000 ATK is a blessing and a curse. He kill can a variety of threats.

The big problem is getting him killed as a result of battle. His 2000 ATK also makes him hard to get killed. Your opponent certainly isn't going to attack it and they aren't going to put a big monster on the field for you to suicide against it. However, there are ways to get him killed:

* Summon him facedown. Your opponent may think it's a Guardian Sphinx and attack it to keep his monsters on the field
* Wait until your opponent has a bigger monster on the field to suicide him
* Use something to weaken him like Dark Jeroid, Hoshiningen or Ring of Magnetism
* Put a power-up equip on one of your opponent's monsters to make them stronger
* Use Creature Swap to give it to your opponent then kill it yourself
* Use Megamorph - he could attack for 4000 one turn, then be 1000 the next

So, once he's in the graveyard as a result of battle, he starts working his magic. Neither player can special summon him from the graveyard so you either have to remove him from play or use Fiber Jar.

All in all, his effect is a killer but ultimately too difficult to pull off. I suppose if you were to use him, I'd put him in a deck with a Guardian Sphinx so your opponent doesn't know which one that facedown monster is that your just tributed for. You could also be sneaky and sidedeck him. Replace your Guardian Sphinx with him in between duels.

Helpoemer. Quite an interesting Monster. Its Effect is quite hard to pull off, but if you can, it is quite devastating to your opponent, with them having to discard a card during each of their turns.

Since this Monster can't be Special Summoned from the Graveyard, though, once it's gone, it's gone. Not too big of a downside, but still something keeping this Monster from being as good as it can be.

A 2000 ATK Monster that needs to be destroyed in Battle to get its Effect activated isn't exactly easy to pull off. Some ways to help w/ getting its Effect easier would be either to set Helpoemer face down when Summoning it, or you could use it in a little combo w/ Dark Jeroid. You could Summon Dark Jeroid and lower your own Helpoemer's ATK by 800, making Helpoemer pretty easy to be destroyed in Battle. Also, it can be searched by the Witch of course, giving it a bit more speed in your deck.

Helpoemer's really not that great, though, due to the fact its Effect is usually very hard to pull off in most situations. And just 2000 ATK's not all that great for a Monster that requires tribute. But like I said before, if you can pull off its Effect, this Monster certainly was worth using.

For casual play, I'd give it about a 3/5.
All-around, though, I'd give it about a 2.5/5.
If you can make it work, then you'll have a nice advantage over your opponent. Otherwise, it's not really worth it.
