Tranorix Armed Samurai - Ben Kei

This is, quite honestly, one of the better cards to come out as of late. Okay, sure, he only has 500 ATK – and he’s Level 4. But he has a rentsy effect that more than makes up for his lackluster stats (which aren’t THAT lackluster, mind you; he’s also DARK and a Warrior, both big plusses; Ben Kei’s searchable via Mystic Tomato, Sangan AND Reinforcement of the Army).

Here’s where Ben Kei shines: Equip him with stuff and he can attack more. So a Ben Kei with an Axe of Despair, instead of attacking ONCE for 1500, can now attack TWICE for 1500 (for a grand total of 3000). Two Axes? Well, now you have a 2500 ATK monster that’s allowed to attack THRICE! And so forth.

It’s not that hard to build a deck around equipping Ben Kei and letting him loose upon an unsuspecting opponent. Just clear the field of any obstacles (Giant Trunade works well here as you’ll probably only need one turn to do your damage – it won’t really matter that your opponent gets to set his S/T again if he never gets a chance to set them, right?) and attack to your heart’s content.

Axe of Despair is a good card to use with Ben Kei, as are United We Stand, Megamorph (sometimes) and Mage Power. Big Bang Shot/Fairy Meteor Crush are also nice; Fusion Sword Murasame Blade might be…good; Guardian Axe – Grarl is even okay. I suppose if you have a lot of equips to make up for the ATK loss you could even go with Shooting Star Bow – Ceal. Yes, Ben Kei is a great monster – in the right deck.

ExMinion OfDarkness Armed Samurai -- Ben Kei

Sorry for the late reveiws here -- finals week at college + procrastinating on papers = forgetting the CotDs for the week.

Ben Kei is the main card in a new kind of deck that Top 8'd at the Houston Shonen Jump Championship -- Equip Swarm. Instead of swarming the field with monsters, you play Ben Kei and throw as many equips on him as possible to gain multiple attacks. If you think BLS is broken as a 3,000 double attacker, imagine this guy with United, Axe, Mage, and Big Bang Shot -- the piddly 500 ATKer becomes a 4700 ATK Trampler who can attack FIVE TIMES during the same battle phase.

The key card to letting this deck get its combo off is Giant Trunade -- an opponent who doesn't see the combo coming won't necessarily chain anything if they have good field presence. That good field presence doesn't mean anything with a mass ATK trampler unless there's a set DD Assailant, DDWL, or something that can kill off the Ben Kei. This is why Trunade is so important -- if you throw 3-4 equips on Ben and he gets Sakuretsu'd, Mirror Forced, or Ringed, that's pretty much a loss for you.

Basically...the deck requires a lot of skill to play correctly -- noobs from back in the day who ran mass equip cards found out first hand about bad hand management, and this card could set up the same thing.

Traditional -- 2.5/5
Advanced -- 4/5 if the opponent doesn't see it coming, 2.75/5 if they do (Suprise is a big factor; if they know you run this they side in Waboku and HLB and screw your Trunades over.)

Snapper Armed Samurai - Ben Kei

It’s another week without a theme! Today’s card is Armed Samurai - Ben Kei, a neat little monster that screams for its own Deck.

To be blunt, Ben Kei stinks on ice stat wise. Because let’s face it; 500 ATK does diddlysquat these days. But lucky for Ben; can I call him Ben? Lucky for Ben he’s a Warrior, giving him access to cards like Reinforcements of the Army, The Warrior Returning Alive, Command Knight, and Fusion Sword Murasame Blade. That last one in particular is especially helpful to Ben, and thinking upon his effect reveals why.

In addition to his standard attack, Ben gets to attack once for each Equip Card equipped to him. Now simple math teaches us this: with 5 S/T zones on each side of the field, that gives a possibility of having a single monster equipped with 10 cards. For Ben this means 10 extra attacks (assuming the opponent was courteous enough to give him 5 Equip Cards) in addition to his regular attack, for a total of 11 attacks in all!

Now what is so great about being able to attack 11 times? Well to make things a tad more believable, we’ll assume your opponent has no Equip Cards on their side of the field. So anyway, the basic Ben has 500 ATK and can attack once; but let’s throw in a Shooting Star Bow - Ceal, allowing Ben to attack the opponent both twice and directly, but bringing Ben down to 0 ATK.
Now since an ATKless monster does you no good when it can attack directly, we’ll need to throw in some ATK boosting cards. For this scenario we’ll throw in a United We Stand (with 3 monsters on your field) and 3 Fusion Sword Murasame Blades (because they’re cool). So this gives us a 3800 ATK monster that can attack the opponent directly a whopping 6 times. 6 x 3800 = 22800 = a dead opponent.

Now most likely you’ll never have the pleasure of accomplishing this task, but you never know. Cards like Collected Power may cause your opponent to inadvertently aid Ben in his search for power. And in a Deck that’s running large amounts of Equips, you may accomplish this feat more often then you’d think, though you’ll probably want a backup plan. Gearfried the Iron Knight and Gearfried the Swordmaster should be nice support monsters in this most likely casual Deck. Don’t get me wrong; I’d love for this Deck to do well, but the current competitive environment is not friendly towards Equips. All in all, Ben’s a neat little monster that could kick some major butt.

Advanced (Equip Deck): 4/5. Ben should be very beneficial.
Traditional (Equip Deck): 4/5. Be cautious of Harpie Brand Feather Dusters!
Overall (Equip Deck): 4/5.
Art: 4/5. He’s got a weapon for every occasion! Spears, axes, swords, daggers; those are my kinds of weapons!

Dark Paladin Armed Samurai Ben Kei
Dark/Warrior
Level 4
500-800

In addition to a normal attack, this card can attack during the same Battle Phase as many times as the number of Equip cards equipped to this card.

Well, let's go over some good points of this card. First, it's a Warrior which is great in today's environment. Secondly, Armed Samurai is a DARK Warrior and with Breaker being one of the few playable DARKS being splashed into decks, attribute of Armed Samurai becomes very important.

Now, some bad points. For a Level 4 monster, Armed Samurai only has 500 points.
Just as bad, he only has 800 defense points meaning he can't even slip under Gravity Bind.

More good--each equip card allows him to attack one additional time. Now, that's good because odds are the equips will make the Samurai stronger, so one Axe of Despair equals two 1500 attacks. Now, we have a decent monster.

More bad--two Axe of Despair would result is three 2500 attacks, which isn't a bad thing. However, the true weakness of this card actually lies in it's special effect. Since it can only attack extra for it's equips, Mobius, Mystical Space Typhoon, Harpie's Feather Duster (Traditional), and Heavy Storm own this card like wh0a.

I suppose this card could be a semi-successful card in a weenie rush deck or something, but I doubt it'll see much competitive play.

Ratings:

Traditional: 1.1/5 Not the worst card ever, but more threats (Harpie's Feather Duster for one) making the effect harder to pull off.

Advanced: 1.9/5 It could almost border semi-playable here. A few less threats but also a few more (Phoenix for one) give it a try, it is DARK after all.

Art: 4/5 A truely awesome picutre.

>From now on, I'll also be keeping a counter for Star Wars Episode III...

Only 17 days...

May the Force be with you, and stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Coin Flip
Armed Samurai – Ben Kei. Just plain crrrazy. Let's see what a nice little combo with this fellow is.

Premature Burial
Axe of Despair
Mage Power.

Wow, we already have a 3000 attacker that can attack four times for three cards that are all searchable by Iron Blacksmith Kotetsu and one of which is unrestricted. Hell, sub in an Axe for the Mage Power and you're still doing 10000 damage.

This card has insane OTK's. I've seen a deck built around it. It worked nicely. Giant Trunades to clear the field, Messenger of Peace and Level Limit – Area B to stall, and Iron Blacksmith Kotetsu as well as Mataza the Zapper. The deck has good searchability. This guy actually has an effective OTK for him. If one OTK isn't enough, he's DARK and chaos fodder. That should be more reason to use him (or not).

So yeah. Bad in Traditional (what isn't?) and good in advanced.

General:
Traditional: 2.2/5
Advanced: 3/5
His own OTK:
5/5 all around.
