Card Trooper

Between this and Magical Stone Excavation, those two cards SINGLE-HANDEDLY made Yu-Gi-Oh a rich man's game again.

Gone are the days where you can netdeck the latest SJC-winning deck for $150. You might have to sell your PS3 to make this -- with Troopers at $60 each and Stones at $110-120, not to mention the other D-Hero support that deck uses at $25 and $30 each for stuff you need 3 copies of... But enough of my "Diamond Dude Turbo is overpriced" rant, let me get back to actually reviewing the card in question!

Card Trooper is just godly. Let's see...1900 beatstick on your turns, balanced by it being 400 on your opponent's. Pitching 3 cards from the deck to the Graveyard loads up your GY for a plethora of effects -- stuff for Bazoo to remove, Magical Stone to pull back to the hand, Preamture and Call to revive, Strike Ninja to dodge with...AND you draw when it's destroyed in any way while it's on your side of the field. This card should be in any deck that can even remotely support it. The few bad times where you'll discard the one out you need to win (Heavy, for example) are far outweighed by all the other benefits this guy has.

Rating: $$$$$$$$$/5...er, 4.5/5

I don't like Card Trooper, I never did. This card is outclassed by Bazoo the Soul Eater, who instead of discarding cards from your Deck, removes them from play and can have 2500 attack instead of 1900.

Bazoo matches this cards maximum attack of 1900 by removing only one card. Also, you can use Bazoo in a good Dimension Fusion, Return From the Different Dimension, or even Strike Ninja deck.

This card doesn't fit any of that criteria. Yes, I am fully aware of the fact that you get to Draw one card when Card Trooper is destroyed, I also don't care. It is a 1 for 1 in your favor, and this card WILL be destroyed, easily.

1.5/5 all around

Art: 3.5/5 It does have a neat picture.

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Card Trooper :
Now that's what I call a card.

Self-milling isn't particularly painful in an aggressive deck, and plenty of decks want things in the graveyard. A 1900 ATK Lv.3 fulfils any beatstick quotient. And, just to sweeten the deal, this beatstick is a floater since it gives you a card when it dies. A fantastic card, though you can't just chuck it in any deck.

Card Trooper

This monster makes so many decks playable and it grants control players a way to be aggressive without a loss. Way to hard to get but one of the best monsters made available in a long time. Most people will use this in monarch, OTK, and remove engine decks. But decks like Fiend, Dragon, or anything that needs cards in the graveyard to function (Exodia, Magical Explosion, E-Hero) can gain something by using a pair of these. Lets not forget he is reachable via machine duplication, Giant Rat, Sangan, etc.

Card Trooper

Has this card revolutionized the dueling world or what? It’s almost on the level of Cyber Dragon, and it adds some significant speed to your deck’s operations. Let’s take a closer look:

  • Trooper discards the top 3 card of your deck in exchange for 1500 more ATK points. His effect then rewards you with another card.

I find this fascinating, since cards that mill cards like this are rare. The “cost” of 3 cards is of no real consequence to any deck since nearly all top-tier decks use the Graveyard more than it was traditionally intended for: Revival of monsters. Card Trooper doubles his usefulness by giving you a card when he’s destroyed and sent to the Graveyard. Another ability I found beneficial is that he is great Exiled Force/Zaborg bait while face-down since he still gets his effect. Talk about versatile.

  • The “mill” is used in your favor and is your deck is built right, you can seriously abuse the mechanics of the Graveyard.

The possibilities of utilizing your Graveyard the way Card Trooper lets you use your Graveyard and nearly limitless. Any deck that uses the Graveyard can throw a couple of copies of Trooper into the deck. Speed, Card Draw, and Graveyard manipulation are hallmarks of this card’s utility. The all-in-one solution for a lot of decks; It’s no wonder he’s valued so high monetarily.

Here’s a list of some deck themes that can benefit from Card Trooper’s mill effect:

  • Fire, Water, Light, Earth, Wind Attribute decks.
  • Fiend, Warrior, Zombie, Spellcaster, and many others.
  • Graveyard dependent decks like Bazoo/Return, Bazoo/Skull Lair, Zombie, decks that use Treeborn Frog.
  • Decks with a large amount of Tributes. Nothing sucks more than drawing Tribute monsters when you don’t need them.
  • Speed up your deck. Card Trooper lets you speed through cards you might not need in a current situation or may need later while they are in the Graveyard.

Can you tell that I love Card Trooper?

The trick is getting my hands on one. ^_^

Last Word: One of the best cards in the game. As useful as Cyber Dragon without the Tribute drawbacks.

If you didn’t get a chance to see the deck list I competed with at the GPG 5-Box Tournament you need to take a look at it.

Turkeyspit Card Trooper

When the contents of Jaden Yuki 2 Duelist Pack were announced, many people proclaimed that Card Trooper would make a huge impact, and boy were they correct.

I saw Bazooper decks (Bazoo the Soul Eater + Card Trooper + Skull Lair) in action a week before they Won / Top 8'd SJC's, and it was clearly obvious that this little card gave several decks a huge boost.

When you get right down to it, if you don't care what cards are sent to the graveyard, then Card Trooper can speed up your deck a whole lot. Since decks like Bazoo Return and DDT both make heavy use of their Graveyard, the milling potential of Trooper can work heavily in their favour.

Alot of people wondered if Trooper was a fad with a short lifespan. I said it did, and it would appear that I am correct, given that DDT and Demise OTK took center stage at the last SJC (although Mike Powers Trooper Explosion deck is certainly worthy of praise), it's apparant that duelists are looking beyond Bazooper as the only viable decktype.

Card Trooper is a versatile and powerful card, but it is in no way a splashable monster. You do not run this card in every deck, as it could potentially do more harm then good.

Ironically, Chimeratech players that normally would benefit from Trooper being a Machine-type monster and it's ability to fuel the graveyard, are reluctant to make use of him for fear of accidentally milling their lone copy of Overload Fusion into the Graveyard.

Have we seen the best of Trooper already? Hard to say. I've seen Trooper pop up in everthing from Exodia to Six Samurai decks lately, and who is to know what's around the corner.

This little guy is firmly entrenched as being a solid addition to the Metagame, and one can only hope that they will one day be reprinted so that the less wealthy among us will be able to pickup a playset.

As we continue this week we look at a card that has seen A LOT of play. And for good reason!

CARD TROOPER
Earth
LV3
ATK/400 DEF/400
[Machine/Effect]
Once per turn, you can send up to 3 cards from the top of your Deck to the Graveyard. This card gains 500 ATK for each card sent to the Graveyard this way, until the end of this turn. When this card on your side of the field is destroyed and sent to your Graveyard, draw 1 card.

So, a level 3 400/400 attack monster. Searchable by Rat, Last Will, Sangan, Witch, UFOroid (no, just no). It can attack under Level Limit Area B, Gravity Bind, and Messenger of Peace (sometimes).

Its first effect is an attack boosting effect that works quite similar to Bazoo. 500 attack for each card discarded, maxing out at 1900. But unlike Bazoo, the boost only lasts till the end of the turn. Ironically, these two monsters are being played together in quite an effective deck. Bring out Card Trooper, send 3 cards to the grave. Bring out Bazoo, remove the monsters Card Trooper discarded, then flip Return from the Different Dimension and cause some huge damage.

The second effect is a simple one for one compensation. If Trooper gets destroyed and send to the graveyard by anything. Smashing Ground, Sakuretsu, Exiled Force, by battle, it doesn’t matter. You get to draw a card. This is very versatile. Other cards have to be destroyed by battle, or by a card effect, in order to draw a card, but it’s quite unique to have one that allows both.

So, obviously, this card is pretty good on it’s own. And it can help out in a variety of decks as well. It gets balanced out by stopping at an attack of 1900, so it can’t pop over a Cyber Dragon, and it’s attack boosting effect only last till the end of that turn. So, if you are running Machines, Bazooper, or just think this guy is cool, go ahead and give it a shot, if you can get your hands on em.

The newest Swiss Army Knife to be added to the game, Card Trooper does a lot, and does it well. His first function is plain and simple: grind your deck if you want more ATK. Maxing at 1900 gives you a solid offence, but thankfully one that doesn’t push the current limit of 2100. His other functions come after death; first off you get a free card when he dies. Secondly he is fodder for Chimeratech.

Honestly, a very viable card that we’ve seen used well already.
