Dark Paladin
Tuesday

Today, we look at Gladiator Beast Secutor, who has rather paltry stats of 400 attack and 300 defense. He does have the Wind attribute, but you aren't supposed to attack with Secutor.

He has the awesome swarming ability of being able to summon not one, but TWO Gladiator Beast monsters from your deck after attacking or being attacked by another monster. There isn't much else to say.

It is because of this monster alone that gladiator beasts have a shot.  It basically allows you to summon two Octavius from your deck (or any other plausible target).  A plus two with the potential to generate more advantage is just wrong.  I am a little confused about some rulings concerning it, but as I understand it is a decent monster.  If anyone would send me rulings concerning its activation requirements I'd appreciate it.

5/5  A great theme support card

Continuing with Gladiator Beasts, we look at a small lil creature with a rather big effect.

Sorta reminds me of Ruby Carbuncle. Little monster, big effect!  If this lil dude gets special summoned by another Gladiator and then survives a battle, you get TWO more Gladiators from your deck.  I’d say that is pretty good, don’t you think?  This could set you up for a big rush, or maybe for one of Gladiator Beast’s Fusion monster.   Secutor surviving a battle in lies the crutch however, so you better have a Battle Manica on it or have a Waboku down as otherwise there isn’t much hope for this lil lizard.

So, again, there is not much else to say about this one.  It’s an awesome card for the deck.  I’d run two, or maybe even three.  Just have the support to keep it alive!

General Zorpa Gladiator Beast Secutor

Situation on a stick. You need to Special Summon him from the deck with a Gladiator Beast monster and then he needs to survive a battle with only 400 ATK and then you get to Special Summon 2 Gladiator's from your deck. He can be good, but is really situational and I just prefer other Gladiators.

Continuing GB theme, and yesterday’s stat based GB – Laquari, let’s first look at Secutor’s ATK and DEF.  400 and 300.  Godly...not?

Threatened even by Sangan, you obviously are not going to use this for a beatdown purpose (Smack that Treeborn Frog!).  Yet when the effect is examined, it is slightly different from other GB’s.  Take a look.

Whereas most GB’s activate their effects immediately when they are Special Summoned by another GB, Secutor must survive an extra Battle Phase in order to bring 2 GB’s.  It certainly is a questionable effect.  Is it worth it though?

            Among possible choices…

1.      Octavius (2500 ATK, destroy 1 face-down S/T)

2.      Murmillo (800 ATK, destroy 1 face-up monster)

3.      Dimacari (1600 ATK, attack twice), which can be turned into Alexander (2400 ATK, immunity from Spell)

4.      Bestiari (1500 ATK, destroy 1 S/T)

5.      Hoplomus (700 ATK, 2400 Def), which can be turned into Spartacus, which can search for GB equip

Searching for 2 Octavius from the deck is not only tempting, but…crippling for your opponent.  Destroy 2 face-down S/T, run over monsters or swing for 5000.  That cost: 1 from the effect that would have activated when non-Secutor GB is brought out, 1 from the effect that that GB would have given, 1 from Waboku or Defensive Tactics, 1 from Secutor itself.  Destroyed 2 face-down, dealt heavy damage or destroyed monsters.  More or less even.

The problem would be to keep Secutor for at least 2 turns, which opponent can destroy or Tribute it.  However, once it succeeds in activating the effect, GB player can get 2 2500 beatsticks, remove 2 face-down S/T and swing.  That’s only one of the possible choices.  2 Dimacari can deal up to 6400, enough LP damage if the opponent used both Premature Burial and Brain Control.

This card can mean a complete turnover.  Be careful how you use it, and be careful when you deal with it.  Failure to protect this card after investing so many can spell doom for you.

Traditional: 1/5                         Too many staples in Traditional.

Advanced:  3.6/5          (in a GB deck) It is a lot of card investment, but payoff can be explosive.
