Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Alien Overlord

You can remove 2 A-Counters from anywhere on the field to Special Summon this card from your hand. Once per turn, you can place 1 A-Counter on each face-up monster your opponent controls. (If a monster with an A-Counter battles an "Alien" monster, it loses 300 ATK and DEF for each A-Counter during damage calculation only.) You can only control 1 face-up "Alien Overlord".

Dark Paladin
Tuesday

All righty, we took Monday off, so welcome to Alien week! Aliens always struck me as a very interesting Decktype...not necessarily the most viable, as the big problem with them revolves around the fact that they really are only as good as the number of A-Counters you have...but I digress.

Alien Overlord opens the week, a Level 6 monster who is a Reptile, as most of the Aliens are (Alien reptiles hmm...) of the Dark attribute with 2200 attack, and 1600 defense, both of which are low for a tribute monster, and I'd expect an Overlord (even that requires only one
tribute) would be stronger.

Now, while tributing for this card isn't the best thing in the world, you can remove two A-Counters from anywhere on the Field to Special Summon this card from your Hand...that makes up for some, and adds to playability. Removing A-Counters is a bit against the Alien theme, but it's only two.

Now, for the true beauty here, most Alien monsters add one counter per turn, or only when Summoned in some way to one mosnter...Alien Overlord spreads one counter per face-up monster your opponent controls, per turn.

This is good, and remember, each time your opponent battles an Alien monster while they have A-Counters on it, it loses 300 attack and defense per counter during Damage Calculation. The biggest downside here is that Alien Overlord only allows one of himself to be on the Field at a time.

Ratings:

Traditional: 1.75/5 Probably doesn't work well here.
Advanced: 2.75/5 Solid card for the Deck, but how solid is the Deck?

General Zorpa Alien Overlord

Now here we get to my favorite cards from teh new set. This guy in integral to the new strategy, so he will be reviewed as if he were only to be played in that deck. His stats certainly start off good. He has 2200 ATK and 1600 DEF on a DARK Reptile level 6 monster. That is not quite good enough to take down a MOnarch, but with his effect, he can takee down anything with 2500 or lower ATK, which is really useful in a format where Stardust Dragon is the main Synchro monster.

Now, his effect. You can remove 2 A Counters from anywhere to Special Summon him. That is essentially a free Special Summon like with Chaos Sorcerer or Cyber Dragon. It is kinda hard to get A Counters to the field, so you might want to actually Normal Summon this guy or Special Summon him in another way until you have a lot of A Counters on the field.

As if a free Special Summon weren't enough, once per turn you can add 1 A Counter to all of your opponent's monsters. This is what the Aliens needed, a way to get A Counters to the field on a massive scale so that they can then activate all of their effects. keep in mind that an A Counter also reduces the ATK of a monster battling an Alien by 300 points per counter, so he can even allow you to go aggro on monsters with lots of A COunters on them with cards that you otherwise wouldn't have been able to.

Of course, there is a restrictive effect. As with the Legendary Rule in Magic, you can only have on Overlord on the field at a time, but that is hardly going to restrict an Alien player from using all 3 copies. Along with Alien Ammonite, this guy makes the deck tick, so you will play as many copies of him as you are able.

Traditional-1/5
Advanced-5/5 (in an Alien deck alone!)

Alien Overlord …

Ok, I’ll try and be fair, but be warned – I NEVER liked these alien critters … EVER. I get the feeling that they may actually be an OK deck type, but nobody likes them or cares enough to ever find out … Quite frankly – all the “A-counter” crap is pretty boring, and an overall hassle to keep track of … especially for something as lack luster as “a slight reduction in ATK points” …. But like I said – I’ll try and be fair …

6 stars. 2200 ATK points. Dark. Reptile. … the only thing good there is being Dark. Reptiles don’t “suck” per se, but they’re still a ways off from actually being “good” … and if something is 6 stars with such a low ATK, it had better have a kick-butt effect to balance it out … Does Alien Overlord?

His 1st effect of being able to be special summoned by removing A-Counters does help his case a little bit, so tributing him should NOT be what u are wasting your time with … ok, so u have a 2200 ATK monster on the field. Now what? He can place an A-Counter on every monster your opponent controls, which will diminish their attack by 300 when battling an Alien. So he himself, without further assistance, can now run over 2400 ATK monsters.

I guess that’s not the worst thing I’ve ever seen. And there may be some combo potential in there, assuming there’s some good alien support floating around. And he does help swarm, even though u can’t have more than one of him … If I were playing an Alien Deck, I’d probably make a place for him in my deck … maybe even 2.

But you’re never in your life gonna actually ever PLAY an Alien Deck anyway, right?
RIGHT???
Promise me! ….

To start the week off we are going to be looking at Alien Overlord. This'll be spicy as I am building an Alien deck and are a few cards away from finishing it. Alien Overlord can be considered a Chaos Sorcerer type monster. By removing 2 A-Counters from anywhere on the field you can Special Summon Alien Overlord and once per turn you can place 1 A-Counter on each face-up monster your opponent controls. This alone makes it a powerful force being a 2200 ATK monster and putting up to 5 counters on monsters at once is a pretty sweet effect. Alien Overlord also does not say it cant be Normal Summoned or Set. This means its a 1 Tribute monster, which again isn't really that bad, but again most of the time you'd rather Special Summon it.

Like a lot of the alien cards, if a monster with an A-Counter battles an Alien monster, that monster loses 300 ATK and DEF for each A-Counter during damage calculation only. This can be a major help against those decks with major beatsticks like Gladiator Beasts and Lightsworns.

Alien Overlord is a must for all alien decks and is a pretty cool looking card.

This card might be good in alien deck but I don't think they will make it this format.
