Max Warrior

Here we have a level 4 WIND Warrior with 1800 ATK and 800 DEF. These are actually good stats. It meets all the requirements for being a decent card, as it is searchale by Warrior support and has the teeth to take out many of the cards being played by Gladiator, Lightsworn and Blackwing players.

The first effect just makes you wanna dance. He gains 400 ATK when he is attacking a monster during the damage step. We have had a few of these cards with Steamroid and Black Veloci being the most notable. The second effect just makes you a sad panda. unlike his compatriots, instead of just losing a significant amount of ATK when attacked, he goes one step further on the bad card scale. If it kills something in battle, it loses half of it's ATK and it's level becomes halved until your next standbye phase.

In all fairness, it does keep it's ATK and level if it is attacked but didn't kill anything in battle. I suppose there can be a combo to get his level stars down for a Synchro summon, but that is not a great way to do that. If you want heavy beatdown, go with Goblin Attack Force. It has higher stats, protects your lifepoints from retaliation, and is a friggin classic.

Max Warrior …

Hmmm … this card is ALMOST interesting … “interesting” in the sense that it’s got a lot of things going on with it, so it makes u wanna sit down and ponder what kind of cool combos u can get going and what u can really do with it …

My first thought is that it reminds me of Goblin Elite Attack Force, in a way. It has 1800 ATK at 4 stars, but when it attacks a monster – it is swinging for 2200 … just like Goblin Elite. In order to balance out that heavy hitting, Goblin Elite shifts into its more vulnerable DEF mode, while Max cuts his level and ATK and DEF in half till your next turn if he destroys a monster in battle. This obviously makes him a sitting duck, even if he is only a sitting duck for less of a duration than Goblin Elite would be …

Lightsworn Jain has a similar boosting effect when she attacks too, but only increasing from 1800 to 2100 … however, she doesn’t lose anything later if she destroys something …

So there’s obviously several “similar but better” monsters out there, so the only thing that would make u think Max has something “special” about him is his level coming down … Can u DO something with that? … maybe … Should u INVEST in Max Warrior in order to try? … Nope. Definitely not.

I guess this weeks mostly Yusei cards, first Majestic Dragon, then Stardust Xiaolong and now Max Warrior, 3 of Yusei's cards debuting in this set. Max Warrior is one of those "Steamroid" monsters, when it attacks it gets attack points, but has a draw back. The only monster without a draw back that gets attack points when it attacks is Jain, Lightsworn Paladin and he isn't splashed randomly into decks. Max Warrior's draw back is its level goes to 2 and it loses half its original attack and defense. But this only lasts till your next standby phase. Course by then it could be easily destroyed. This is the same for all the monsters with a similar effect, except Jain of course. If you are gonna run a warrior that has a built in power boost like Steamroid, Jain is the way to go.

Max Warrior:

Max Warrior from Stardust Overdrive is a card that just misses the mark in my opinion. There are so many more viable alternatives to this card that have atk boost effects, or that already have a superior atk value with a less detrimental secondary effect. The only reason I could see people experimenting with this card is for Dark Simorgh food, and even then there are better wind monsters to work with such as Mist Valley Soldier or for that matter, Slate Warrior. At least he reduces the atk of the monster that destroys him by 500.

Traditional: 1.0
Advanced: 1.5 (there are worse cards)
