Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Blackwing - Gust the Backblast
#TSHD-EN002

If you control no cards, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. While this card is face-up on the field, if your opponent's monster attacks a "Blackwing" monster you control, the attacking monster loses 300 ATK during the Damage Step only.

Blackwing - Gust the Backblast ...

Let it be known that I hold a special place in my heart for Blackwing monsters ... But please ... can they offer some support for OTHER things?!?!

Anyways, at first glance, i really didnt like this card. 900 ATK. Can special summon itself if u control no cards. Right away that screams no good. Blackwing players usually like to have Whirlwind or 2 on the field, if nothing else. An Icarus attacks laying in wait, or SOMETHING ... But let's say u don't and your opponent has a monster on the field. Most people would rather bring out Sirroco instead. Much beefier. But then u look a little closer and notice that Gust is a SPECIAL summon... As great as the Blackwings are, and as quickly as they can swarm, Special summoning will always be faster and more useful than normal summoning, even if its for somewhat weaker monsters. You probably won't need to tribute him, but now that u have a Blackwing out, u can normal summon Elphin the Raven, the strongest (and one of the coolest IMO) non-synchro Blackwing. There was never a handy way to bring him to a naked field before, without baiting in a tribute for him 1st. So if u like Elphin, then u should like Gust a little bit. Plus his 2nd effect, although a LITTLE bit ok, isnt going to ensure a lot other than that your opponent will probably just kill off Gust first ...

Uhm ... He's better than he looks, and i'll just leave it at that.

Greg Blackwing - Gust the Backblast:

As if Blackwings needed help with synchros... then along comes this guy.  Swarm combos and synchro combos are what this guy was made for, as his second effect is pretty much crap.  He adds two stars to any synchro equation the Blackwing player desires.  Will he see play?  That's a good question, as Blackwings already have many ways to synchro, and he does lead to poor hand management.  I think he might get splashed around a little bit, but for the most part, the competitive set will move past this guy after a little bit of experimentation.  He just doesn't add enough oomph on his own.

Blackwing – Gust the Backblast is another new Blackwing monster.  This tiny Level 2 Dark/Winged Beast has a mere 900 ATK and slightly better 1400 DEF.  It can Special Summon itself from your hand if your field is completely empty.  It also drops your opponent’s monsters’ ATK by 300, but only during the damage step when said monsters are attacking a Blackwing.

Another Blackwing on the field is another Blackwing on the field but if you’re going first, you won’t be able to attack right away and probably don’t want to swarm unless its for a Synchro Summon (preferably that can protect itself).  If you’re doing your job your field isn’t totally empty at the beginning of your turn any other turn.  So if you go second it can be a good way to start the ball rolling.  Given the other Blackwing support fighting for deck space, I think this might be another one to pass on.

Today's card is Blackwing - Gust the Backblast, and if you ask me, doesn't really look like a Blackwing. But it doesn't really matter, because he's not going to see any use whatsoever. If you have a completely empty field (no Solidarity or BWW allowed), you can special summon him from your hand. Big whoop, Sirocco doesn't need a tribute.

Gust has the unbelievable ability to decrease an attacking monster's ATK by a whopping 300 points for just the damage step! Sure, you could use him to make the Shura you're about to summon last a turn, but that's not going to do anything in a meta of giant monsters. Won't stop an Infernity swarm, won't stop Tytannial or a Synchro, runs for the hills when it sees Caius, etc.

This card is too situational and his effect is way too weak to be of any consistent use. Blackwings have much better cards to run and should never have to resort to cards like Ghibli or Gust.

Art: Another guy in a chicken suit. Sounds like a plan.
Fun Fact: That .1% of germs nothing can kill is going to take over the universe.
Tomorrow: This guy parties hard because he has a lampshade on his head.

Blackwing - Gust the Backblast

Gust is another badly designed piece of support for Blackwings. It's a non-tuner with absolutely atrocious stats and a terrible effect. The effect will only have relevance if your opponent either refuses to read new cards on the field or reads the effect and chooses to ignore it foolishly.

Gust creates no card advantage. The only redeeming factor to it is you can continue the Whirlwind chain by searching a Gust from Blizzard or Gale, then summoning Gust to search Vayu. Unfortunately, the card is so bad that you would be better off simply skipping that part of the chain entirely.

The card would have been far better with more solid stats (such as 1600/0) and a better effect. By itself, a 300 ATK decrease basically means anything with 1700+ ATK can swing over it with ease.
