Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Blackwing Aurora of the Northern Lights
#STBL-JP016

Early Japanese Translation: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except by removing from play 1 face-up "Blackwing" Tuner monster and 1 face-up non-Tuner monster you control. Once per turn, you can remove 1 "Blackwing" Synchro Monster from your Extra Deck. Until the End Phase, while face-up on the field, this card's name is treated as that monster's name, its ATK becomes equal to that monster's ATK, and it gains the same effects as that monster.

It's a Bird!?!

Blackwing-Aurora of the Northern Lights does lots of things that many Blackwing monsters do not.  First, he's Level 10, and not a Synchro monster, with ? attack and 0 defense, Light attributed, and a Winged-Beast (surprise!)

You can't Normal Summon or Set this bird, but he can only be Special Summoned by removing a face-up Blackwing-Tuner and non-Tuner you control...which is good this guy isn't a Synchro as Level 10 would be hard to accomplish, while this is more or less an a-typical Blackwing ploy.

Once a turn, you can remove a Blackwing Synchro Monster from your Extra Deck, and until the End Phase, Aurora of the Norther Lights becomes that monster...name, attack, and any effects said Synchro monster may have.  This is really interesting, as this isn't a bad card at all, but in an all ready loaded Blackwing arsenal, do you need it?

Blackwing - Aurora of the Northern Lights …

This is one of those cards that u hate when u first look at it, but then by the 3rd or 4th time u read it – u start to see that it aint so bad … Only, it’s not at all that awesome either.

U can’t normal summon it, which is good, cuz u’d be an idiot to try. So the question then becomes – why go through the fuss of removing tuners and monsters on your field from play to special summon Aurora, when u can just Synchro summon for whatever Synchro monster u want anyway? – Well the benefit of Aurora is that it can copy ANY Blackwing Synchro u’ve got, no matter what built it in the first place. U might only have a 2 star Tuner and a token or something, but u can bring out Aurora and have it copy the ATK and effect of ur Armor Master or Blackwing Dragon or something … which is great … especially for a final blow. … But it’s only great for that 1 turn, cuz after that, if u haven’t finished off ur opponent – Aurora is a sitting duck, and it can be slaughtered by just about anything.

So here u have a card that can win it for u if u are already relatively in control and have resources at ur disposal … but is an abysmal top-deck, and can only really help u out on the turn u get it to the field, since it shouldn’t last much longer … hmmm … Could go either way with this thing … I’d say – try it, but don’t rely on it.

Blackwing- Aurora of the Northern Lights

This is one of the new Blackwing monsters, and that usually means that we are going to be trying to put it into a very fast and competitive deck that has very few slots for new cards. Aurora starts out bad with its stats. It is a level 10 DARK WInged Beast with 0 ATK and DEF. Right there, unless it gets like 2000 ATK for each Blackwing you contorl it is going to be completely unplayable. Or is it?

Aurora's effect states that it cannot be Normal Summoned or Ste and only Special Summoned by removing form play a Blackwing Tuner and non-Tuner that you control. The beneficial effect si that you can remove from play a Blackwing Synchro in your extra deck from the game in order to have it gain the name and effects of that monster until the end of the turn. Wow, now that is anti-climactic.

If it sent the monster to the garveyard, this card would be good. If it could be Summoned by removing Blackwings from EITHER side fo the field, it would be great. But it doe sneither of those things, meaning that the card is almost bunk. Basically, why would you just not Synchro Summon for the monster? It uses less cards, doesn't remove your Synchros and is basically better gameplay. With the translation I am using, it is hard to tell whether or not the card retains the effects of the monster while it is face up on the field, but it definitely doesn't keep the stats and name. So bye bye birdie.

We're getting new Blackwings in Starstrike Blast... But those Blackwings are still bad. Konami is intent on not giving Blackwings real support. So, what does this card do, exactly? It's like paying a card in your hand to make a Synchro, but you have to remove your Blackwings from the game and this goes back to a 0 ATK piece of trash. You can't even throw it out with Allure of Darkness. How far would you go to tweak a level and attack with a different Synchro for a turn?

Art: That's ugly. What's up with the head thingy?
Fun Fact: I like eggs.
Tomorrow: We get a mega awesome Blackwing card.
