Netdecking; The Great Debate

November 8, 2005

Welcome back readers! I am FINALLY in a new house after the Hurricane, and I am getting used to living in this new environment, so all is well =]. I hope you will be happy to know that I will be back to writing 1/2/3 Articles and/or Deck Fixes per week, and all five CoTD’s per week, starting next Monday ;-). But back to my newest article...

Netdecking; The Great Debate
By: Ricky

Today my article is about Netdecking. I will talk about its origins, its history, and everything else that comes with it!

The Origins

Who actually started “Netdecking”? Where did it come from? I honestly have no idea. But it has been around for a long time.

You see, it is all about how you define the term, depending on how you DO define it, its origins are unknown, just for the fact that there are many types of netdecking, and nobody really knows which happened when.

I consider the term “Netdecking” to mean that you look up a decklist on the Internet, Metagame.com, or other Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan site, and then copy it. Card for card. But that’s not to say that there are no other ways to netdeck, either.

You may consider someone using someone else’s idea is netdecking. What if Johnny runs 2 Time Seal as tech in his deck? What if you copy the idea? Is that netdecking? Its all about how you look at it.

The History

If you ask a seasoned Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist what they believe the most “Netdecked” deck or decktype is/was, 99% of the time, they will tell you about the 2003 World Championship. Ng Yu Leung ran a Hand Control deck that dominated the entire championship.

His deck was well constructed, consistent, and pretty customizable. Ng Yu Leung’s deck would become, the most netdecked deck in the history of Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Everyone, netdecked that deck. It was absolutely crazy.

Long after that, Team Savage was formed and began doing well at Shonen Jump Tournaments with off-the-wall original decks that were also very netdeckable. Evan “Sand-Trap” Vargas, Duelist and fellow Pojo.com Writer and CoTD Reviewer made Soul Control and pioneered it to a 15th place finish in Sjc Vegas, and a Top 4 finish in Sjc Pomona. It remains one of the most netdecked decktypes ever.

Nationals 2005 was the setting, Max Suffridge won the main event with some creative tech. He ran 2 copies of Gravekeepers Spy, and a single copy of Gravekeepers Guard. This deck worked very well against the meta at Origins, and he eventually won the whole thing with it! This was ALSO netdecked. A LOT.

My Stance On The Issue

Do I think Netdecking is wrong and shouldn’t be practiced? Of course not. The way I see it, even I netdeck. The way I “Netdeck” is, if I see a deck that is very similar to my own, by say 2-3 cards, and if those cards help the deck, whether they be Tech, or just multiples of an already decked card, I will copy that deck =/. Even if it IS only a three card difference, I consider it netdecking. Because I netdecked the actual tech and/or card choice that the person made, and I support that =/. I do give credit, of course.

Do I “Netdeck” entire decks? Well no. I make all of my decks, because to me, making the deck is half the fun of playing Yugioh. But that doesn’t mean I will put down someone who does. If that’s what you want to do, or have to do to play Yugioh, then by all means go ahead and do it. I don’t mind playing my deck/other good deck every tourney, but everyone knows that the pros will beat the netdeckers 99% of the time, so why be angry towards the copy-decks-card-for-card netdeckers? As long as you know you can win, who the heck cares?

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is this, whether you are with Netdecking, or Against it, its your opinion and you have every right to it. As long as you are having fun playing Yu-Gi-Oh!, everything is right in the world =].
