Wrenn and Six #9 – Top 12 MTG Cards of 2019

This card was 4th on my Top 12 list.

Wrenn and Six might not have caught everyone’s attention in the lead up to Modern Horizons, but the newest two-mana planeswalker has certainly caught everyone’s attention since then! Legacy and Modern have both been a rather fertile playground for the symbiotic planeswalker, and it’s not hard to see with its main abilities.

In a format reliant on fetch lands and other graveyard-based synergies, their +1 is a simple value ability that lets you recycle those lands, and their -1 is also an excellent check to the many X/1 creatures that populate Legacy and Modern. Think Dark Confidant, Birds of Paradise, other mana dorks, and even bigger creatures like Vendilion Clique and Brazen Borrower. Simply popping one of them when they come down is a good way to deny that bit of advantage, especially when it’s just a -1! (It can even be aimed anywhere, which is also fun.) They’re rarely used for their ultimate, but retrace can be subtly powerful if you have lands to feed into it (and it can grind its way to 7 loyalty if you have nothing else to do with it).

Wrenn and Six is not flashy by any stretch, but there’s still a place for an obnoxiously efficient card advantage machine that can push itself out of Lightning Bolt range immediately. They’re quite good and a dominant presence in the formats they’re legal in, which is why I was rather high on them on my list.

Hello Everyone and welcome back to Pojo’s Card of the Day!

We’re going over the top 12 cards that came out in 2019 and today we are taking a peek at the Planeswalker that dethroned Foil Urza as the most expensive card from Modern Horizons!

Now Wrenn and Six was not on my top 12 list, and I have two good reasons for that.

1. I have not been able to thoroughly test this card in my vintage cube.
2. I dun goofd.

Wrenn and Six more than deserves its foil price tag of over 200$ because simply how strong it is in a variety of formats. At first glance it doesn’t scream abusive for a 2 mana planeswalker, and I know I’m not the only one that was scratching their heads at this card before pulling the trigger on a Foil Urza instead in hopes that this one would drop.

But Fetchlands are pretty awesome in Modern.

Not to mention that Liliana of the Veil goes to ‘1’ after a sac effect.

Also Llanowar Elves conveniently has 1 toughness.

…and Birds of Paradise.

And Snapcaster Mage.

Oh and Thalia!

Not to mention it’s +1 allows you to bring back a land which in decks with low land counts it adds up to ‘draw a card’ or like how the Jund Deck has decided to simply bypass the middleman and go for splashing in the cycling lands.

In Commander this guy is pretty strong given how integral fetchlands and utility lands are, and how people seem to love wastelanding and strip-mining your fun utility lands!

Constructed 4/5 – It’s shown to be incredibly strong but has been outshined by Oko as a top contender planeswalker, still I’m sure it has a lot more potential than is being seen.

Multiplayer 2/5 – Not as strong in a constructed format where a 2 mana planeswalker is seen as more of a threat to the political status quo.

Commander 3/5 – A bit stronger here than regular multiplayer where people are more apt to let you do your own thing for a bit. Just stick with grabbing lands rather than pinging elves!

Limited 2/5 – Worth picking up just for the pack value, but in a draft it won’t be doing much unless you snag a couple cycling lands with it.

Cube 3/5 – I haven’t personally tested it but I’ve seen amazing things… also I just picked up a foil one so we’ll see in a few weeks!

This card narrowly missed making my Top 12 list.

Wrenn and Six is a cheap planeswalker with relatively small numbers on it, but then Modern and Legacy are formats of low costs and small margins. One damage is exactly the margin between getting dominated by Dark Confidant or Noble Hierarch and turning the tables; one land can make all the difference, especially when it’s something like a fetchland or a Wasteland. I like his ultimate very much, though its high cost compared to his starting loyalty makes it arguably not as well suited to eternal formats as the rest of him is. I’d love to see it with Warp World (this works because it’s an emblem, not an ability of the permanent!).
