Snake-Eye Week has come on Pojo and we’re getting things started with Snake-Eye Ash.
The whole Snake-Eye archetype is FIRE and Level 1 minus Friday’s CoTD, which is the heavy-hitter of the archetype. They all have their own effect, but each trade themselves and a card on the field to Special Summon a Snake-Eye monster from somewhere, and all of them are easily searched with stuff like Bonfire and Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye.
Snake-Eye Ash adds a Level 1 FIRE from the Deck to the hand whenever it gets summoned: it’s the searcher for the archetype, as well as searching out any tech FIRE Level 1’s you might be playing (like Jet Synchron or Kurikara). Oddly enough, Snake-Eye Ash fits in as a search card into Infernoble Knights, as well as Evotile. You might even catch this monster in a Fire King deck as a searcher for Ponix.
Trading Snake-Eye Ash and another card you have to Special Summon a Snake-Eye from the hand or Deck except itself is an easy way to cheat out Friday’s CoTD: Snake-Eye Flamberge Dragon. This equates to a two-tribute summon, but is a Special Summon and can fish from the Deck, which is much better than your standard two-tribute summon. The Sinful Spoils cards work alongside the archetype to help force the opponent’s monsters to become Continuous Spells and then you Special Summon them to your side of the field using various cards in your deck.
Every archetype begins with a searcher, and Snake-Eye Ash is that for this archetype. Gets you to any of your smaller archetype monsters, as well as some tech cards, and, can get you quickly to your biggest monster. It could see itself in other archetypes because of its ability to search a Level 1 FIRE and not just “Snake-Eye” monsters. If you are playing Snake-Eye though, you are for sure playing One for One, that searches the entire archetype.

We expand into Diabellstar’s lore with the first archetype for our story, the Snake-Eyes, and look at one of the better of the currently 3 Level 1 Snake-Eyes: Snake-Eye Ash.
Ash is a Level 1 FIRE Pyro with 800 ATK and 1000 DEF. Stats are middling, Level 1 FIREs are great, and Pyro has some good support now. Upon Normal or Special Summon, you can search for any Level 1 FIRE monster. It gets to most of the Snake-Eye monsters, including Populus for it to Special Summon itself. You also got generic stuff like Volcanic Shell, Jet Synchron, and Kurikara Divincarnate or stuff that’s more specific to their archetypes like Rescue-ACE Hydrant, Infernoid Decatron, or Legendary Fire King Ponix. You can also send 2 face-up cards, including this card, to the grave to summon any Snake-Eye monster from the Deck, which does get you to your boss monster or any of the other smaller monsters that might be able to extend your plays. It’s costly, so hope you don’t get hit with an Ash Blossom, but it can result in a nice payoff, especially sacrificing another card on the field that is otherwise dead or something you can recover in the combo. Hard once per turn on each effect, of course. Ash is one of the better starters for Snake-Eye, which is getting popular in the OCG and will likely start seeing play in the TCG once we get the second wave of support. Ash is key to your Snake-Eye combos, so 3 feels good for more pure variants, and you can go down a few if you are using a mix.

This week we’re officially diving into the Snake-Eye archetype introduced in Age of Overlord; we’ve already touched on a few of their cards in our 2023 countdown, but they still have quite a few cards worth mentioning. Snake-Eye Ash is first up, a level 1 FIRE Pyro monster like most Snake-Eye monsters so far. Naturally, it’s accessible with Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye and, ironically, itself, though I can’t imagine why you’d do that. Ash’s stats, while impressive for a level 1, are still level 1 stats, with a meager 800 attack and 1000 defense, so don’t count on it for beating anything to death.
Ash has two hard once per turn effects; the first is a simple ROTA, searching any level 1 FIRE monster if it’s Normal or Special Summoned. Oddly, Ash can search itself, but you’re much better off searching Snake-Eye Birch which can immediately summon itself or the new monster from Phantom Nightmare, which opens all sorts of explosive lines. Of course, Ash also functions very similarly to Original Sinful Spoils, so you can also grab generic playmakers like Rescue-ACE Hydrant or Legendary Fire King Ponix, if Original Sinful Spoils is out of commission. Ash’s other effect lets you send two cards you control to the Graveyard including itself to Special Summon any Snake-Eye monster from your hand or deck, this time excluding Ash itself. This is the easiest way to summon the archetype’s boss, leading to Rank 8 or high-level Synchro plays, though having to give up 2 cards is a tad steep. Ash is flying a bit under the radar for now as Snake-Eye needs Bonfire and their Phantom Nightmare support to reach their full potential, but when it comes, Ash will be even more important! Pure variants should run 3 copies, though as an engine you’ll be fine with at least one.
