Hello Pojo Fans,

Magic Planter is our Throwback Thursday choice and a mainstay in this archetype we’re highlighting this week.

Never thought I’d see an archetype that could excel using Magic Planter, as getting rid of a Continuous Trap for two cards, while good, usually meant getting rid of a floodgate or, at best, a useless CoTH. Now, with Centur-Ion, you can use this card at will and not take a back step to advantage. The two cards are great, since Centur-Ion only have Primera to search something directly to the hand, but it’s their ability to pull themselves from the grave through other cards that helps this card shine. Emeth VI can pull itself from the grave by moving a Centur-Ion from the field to the Spell/Trap Zone, making it the best target for Magic Planeter. Tomorrow’s boss monster Legatia every turn can move a Centur-Ion from the grave or hand into the Spell/Trap Zone. While that happens in the End Phase you will be set up next turn, and I’m not forgetting about Trudea, who can place herself from the hand and another Centur-Ion from the Main Deck into the Spell/Trap Zone. Use Trudea to place Emeth VI into the Spell/Trap Zone, use Magic Planter on Emeth VI, then Special Summon Emeth VI back with its effect…or use Emblema Oath to do that but with less cards.

Magic Planter has found its home archetype and it only took 15 years. Sure, you saw it pop up as a tech choice here and there, but THIS archetype has given it a home.

Advanced- 3/5 (4.5/5 in Centur-Ion)

Throwback Thursday for this week is a classic draw card you can trade your Continuous Traps for: Magic Planter.

Magic Planter is a Normal Spell that lets you send a face-up Continuous Trap you control to the graveyard to draw 2 cards. Simple 2-for-2 draw power we see for several other cards. I remember this back in the day being good for getting rid of a dead Call of the Haunted or Fiendish Chain for 2 new cards, or later on being able to use this in Volcanics to send Blaze Accelerator Reload to use its graveyard effect to blast a Scattershot on the opponent’s turn if you didn’t draw it. Now you could use it with Centur-Ions if you wanted, sometimes you might have extra copies of names on the field, but you usually want to keep the only copies you got in the Continuous Trap spot to use their effects and continue to combo. It’s fine in stun to get rid of floodgates you might not need or have extra copies of, or dead cards like Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade or Crackdown. Magic Planter can still be useful with Continuous Trap strategies. I don’t know about Centur-Ion, but you can still find something for a card like this.

Art:: 2/5 This implies that Ivy Shackes would ever be on the field to begin with.

Throwback Thursday gives us the Normal Spell Magic Planter, which was coincidentally reprinted in Valiant Smashers to promote Centur-Ion. Magic Planter has a single effect, letting you send a face-up Continuous Trap you control to the Graveyard to draw two cards. That’s it! It’s not surprising that they’re trying to promote using it in Centur-Ion, considering their gimmick, but ultimately Magic Planter does more harm than good. You actually want to keep your Centur-Ion monsters in the backrow so that they can summon themselves eventually. The only use I can see is maybe getting some value off of Centur-Ion Emeth VI in the Graveyard, but considering you can draw a card anyway by summoning the deck’s boss, there’s no real reason to play Magic Planter. Funnily enough, I can see Magic Planter as a tech in Uria-focused Phantom Beast decks, if only to fuel your Graveyard with Continuous Traps, though you’d still have to flip them first. Some old cards are waiting for their day, but today is not Magic Planter’s day.

+Can be a casual tech in decks like Centur-Ion, Vision HERO, and Uria
-Requires a face-up Continuous Trap
-Interferes with combos for the aforementioned decks
