Chansey (Base Set) – Card of the Day Review
- Number: 3/102
- Rarity: Rare
- Type: Colorless
- HP: 120
- Retreat Cost: 1
Attacks:
- Scrunch – Flip a coin. If heads, prevent all damage done to Chansey during your opponent’s next turn. (Any other effects of attacks still happen.)
- Double-Edge: The Double-Edge attack deals 80 damage but also inflicts 80 damage to Chansey. While powerful, it comes with the drawback of self-damage. Pairing Chansey with healing cards or effects can mitigate this drawback.
- Weaknesses: Fighting
- Resistances: Psychic
Review:
Ah, Chansey, the iconic pink blob of pure HP. This Base Set powerhouse holds a special place in many trainers’ hearts, and for good reason. Let’s break down its pros and cons:
Pros:
- Immense HP: With a whopping 120 HP, Chansey is a wall of a Pokemon. In the Base Set era, where attacks maxed out at around 40 damage, tanking hits was key. Chansey could take multiple shots from even the strongest attackers and stay standing.
- Colorless type: No Energy restrictions meant Chansey fit into any deck. She could stall for time in Aggro decks, or even act as a surprise attacker in Stall decks.
Cons:
- Vulnerable to Fighting: A single Machamp’s Seismic Toss could KO Chansey, and Fighting-type Pokemon were common back then.
- Low offensive pressure: Chansey wasn’t designed to win through damage though.
Overall:
Back in the early days, some folks would toss 1 or 2 Chanseys into their decks to act as punching bags until they could get their attacks set up. Chansey could also be used in a mill deck, hoping to run your opponent out of cards.
Let’s be honest though. This is simply a really nice collector’s card really. A beautiful foil from Base Set? Yes please!
