Hello Pojo Fans,

Throwback Thursday is an old powerhouse of a card from not too long ago: Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy.

Titanic Galaxy is a generic Rank 8 that is a Spell negation cost-free that turns that negated Spell Card into a material. Already, that alone is a great effect, and combined with its huge stats make it a great card on its own. However, when you factor in the ability to trade a material to force an attacking monster to attack Titanic Galaxy instead and go through damage calculation, it becomes even better. 3000ATK stacks up against pretty much anything in the game, so your opponent will need a monster effect(s) to take down Titanic Galaxy since it will be negating at least one Spell Card per turn.

The permanent ATK gain Titanic Galaxy can give an Xyz Monster (including itself) when another of your Xyz Monsters are destroyed lines up with the Galaxy-Eyes/Photon archetype’s ability to spam Xyz Summons. If the effect goes off you should be pumping up an Xyz by at least 2000ATK given how high Rank 4 monsters ATK are now, and within the Galaxy/Photon archetype their Xyz Monsters have big ATK, so it isn’t out of the question to raise an ATK by 2500+.

Titanic Galaxy for its negation once per turn forces your opponent to waste a Spell to get their better Spell through. Most players will see through that and hold off till the most meaningful Spell is played and then negate. When Imperial Order was legal and alongside this card, it was a double negation and then constant negation. You aren’t likely to attack over this monster, especially if it raises its own ATK by a destroyed Xyz Monsters’s ATK through its own effect. It stands as still one of the better Rank 8 monsters that are in the game and could easily be thrown into any deck that makes Rank 8 on its Spell negation alone.

Throwback Thursday for this week brings us to a generic Rank 8 of old to prepare us for a modern one tomorrow, and this old Rank 8 still sees play today: Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy.

Number 38 is a Rank 8 LIGHT Dragon Xyz with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF. A very strong stat-line for a Rank 8, Dragon is always great, and LIGHT has solid support. Materials are any 2 Level 8 monsters, of course meaning it’s generic. First effect is a soft once per turn and a Quick Effect when the opponent activates a Spell Card or effect on field, letting you negate the effect and attach the card to this as Xyz Material. A generic Spell negate is fairly good, especially as we keep getting more powerful Spell Cards. Gaining it as material also allows you to use its other effect more, which can trigger when the opponent declares an attack, letting you detach a material from this card to redirect the attack to this card, giving your smaller monsters protection by forcing them into battling a 3000 ATK monster. Finally, if another face-up Xyz(s) you control is destroyed by battle or card effect, you can target a face-up Xyz you control to have it gain ATK equal to one of the destroyed monster’s original ATK. You’ll most likely target this to get its 3000 ATK even higher, which makes it more difficult for the opponent when it comes to the redirect attack effect. The boost doesn’t go away, either, which is always great. It’s a great Rank 8, mainly for the first effect, since the rest of the effects will probably be dodged around after the Spell negate is used, but they are there to force the opponent into more unoptimal plays. If you can make generic Rank 8s, then this is great for those strategies. It’s perfect for anyone using the Horus package, and it can counter power Spells like WANTED and Original Sinful Spoils. Play it if you use Rank 8s.

To celebrate Photon Lord’s upcoming reprint, Throwback Thursday brings us Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy (a mouthful of a name), a Rank 8 LIGHT Dragon Xyz monster marginally related to the Galaxy and Photon themes (and, by extension, Blue-Eyes). It’ll take any two level 8 monsters, making it simple to make in Galaxy decks, as well as with the Horus engine. Fittingly, it also packs Blue-Eyes’s solid 3000 attack and 2500 defense stats.

Hope Harbinger’s first effect is a soft once per turn Quick effect, oddly not requiring an Xyz material detach, that can respond to and negate any Spell Card effect activation, then attach that Spell to Hope Harbinger as an Xyz material. This is Hope Harbinger’s primary effect and the main reason you’ll make it; Spells are always in the meta in some form, so Hope Harbinger is a very reliable endboard piece. Against Fire King and Snake-Eye, you can squash Fire King Sanctuary and Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye, not to mention the myriad of Spell card combo pieces for other decks. Hope Harbinger’s second effect is lesser known but still quite strong, letting you detach an Xyz material and redirect an opponent’s attack to itself. With 3000 attack, Hope Harbinger is quite beefy, so you can use it to protect vulnerable low-attack monsters like S:P Little Knight or Galaxy-Eyes Solflare Dragon. Its last effect kind of plays into the previous one, triggering if another Xyz monster you control is destroyed by battle or card effect, letting you target a face-up Xyz monster you control and have it gain that monster’s original attack stat. The aim of this is probably to make Hope Harbinger even stronger to pressure your opponent out of attacking, since it’d be difficult to overcome it in terms of raw stats; additionally, you can sack one of your own Xyz monsters to power up Hope Harbinger so that it can overcome high-stat monsters, like, say, Bystial Dis Pater. There’s not much to complain about with Hope Harbinger; you just need to weigh whether your opponent’s deck is Spell-heavy enough to justify summoning it over Number 90: Galaxy-Eyes Photon Lord.

+Easy to summon
+Spell negate is simple but powerful
+Can protect weaker monsters from being destroyed by battle
-Can be useless against decks with little to no Spells
-May compete with Photon Lord to be summoned first
