Nightmare Pain – #PHNI-EN054
During your Main Phase: You can destroy 1 DARK monster in your hand or face-up field, and if you do, add 1 “Yubel”, or 1 card that mentions it, from your Deck to your hand, except “Nightmare Pain”. You can only use this effect of “Nightmare Pain” once per turn. While you control a “Yubel” monster, your opponent’s monsters that can attack must attack “Yubel” monsters. Your opponent takes any battle damage you would have taken from battles involving your “Yubel” monsters.

Hello Pojo Fans,
Nightmare Pain is an all-around Yubel searcher.
Continuous Spell that is a 1-for-1 for you, but only during your Main Phase. It has to be limited to your Main Phase only because of the vagueness of the text not specifying Yubel or a monster that says Yubel somewhere in the text. Destroy a DARK monster in the hand or face-up on the field is very easy to do in this archetype even without this card, but now that you are given the option to do so with this card it streamlines your way to another form of Yubel by popping Spirit of Yubel. Any Yubel card is searchable with Nightmare Pain except itself (obviously), giving you multiple options. Popping Spirit of Yubel with Nightmare Pain, as mentioned yesterday, will get you a search as well, triggering the Special Summon of another form of Yubel while getting you a total of three potential searches from the Deck for the price of one. Popping Spirit of Yubel can get you to Nightmare Pain, and then when you Special Summon Yubel from the Deck, you can pop that to get to Terror Incarnate as well.
Nightmare Pain forcing your opponent to attack Yubel monsters and only Yubel monsters and take the battle damage is a nice touch that calls back to the original Yubel effect. Because Spirit of Yubel does not share that effect, this tacks that onto that to combo with their battle protection and you taking no damage from battles involving Spirit of Yubel, as well as Spirit of Yubel being able to Special Summon themselves during your opponent’s turn, causing a reset during the Battle Phase. This is also handy for if your Yubel monster(s) were to have their effect(s) negated, ensuring your opponent would be taking damage.
The search and ability to destroy a DARK monster with Nightmare Pain make it a pain for your opponent. This card helps you search through your Deck for you Yubel cards and should help facilitate the summon of a Yubel monster. The battle damage effect covers Yubel monsters that don’t inherit that ability, while forcing your opponent to attack prevents them from walling up attackers and just waiting out an effect to get around the battle damage they’d take. Not all monsters can shift into defense mode and you could catch your opponent unaware with Spirit of Yubel if they were to get rid of a Yubel you had without destroying it: a much easier thing to do in 2024.

Midweek brings us a brand new Continuous Spell for the Yubel strategy to offer consistency, a better way to deal damage, and a way to destroy Yubels to go into other forms: Nightmare Pain.
Nightmare Pain is a Continuous Spell where during your Main Phase, you can destroy a DARK monster in your hand or face-up on your field to search for any card that mentions Yubel, besides Nightmare Pain, or Yubel itself. It’s another way to get to the backrow or you can get to the monsters of the Deck like Samsara D Lotus, Geistgrinder Golem, Infernal Grave Squarmer, or Spirit of Yubel. The destruction also makes Yubel and Spirit of Yubel float whether destroyed from hand or field, while Terror Incarnate will only float if destroyed on field. That’s the only hard once per turn effect on it. The other effects make the opponent attack your Yubel monsters if able, and your opponent takes any damage you would have taken from battles involving your Yubel monsters. The first effect is good to force damage onto the opponent, but if they go defensive, you can push and do the damage yourself. With Yubel, Terror Incarnate, The Ultimate Nightmare, and The Loving Defender Forever you get the potential chance to do that damage twice to the opponent, with Ultimate Nightmare and Loving Defender doing such whether they attack or are attacked, while the other two have to be attacked to do damage twice. Nightmare Pain is a great consitency card for the Deck while also being a way to really add up damage against the opponent. You want this card as soon as you can in the Deck, which thankfully Spirit of Yubel does search it.

Art: 4.5/5 It’s basically Yubel’s attack from the anime, which the name of the card is the name of said attack.

Yubel’s trademark ability gets its own card as Nightmare Pain, a Continuous Spell searchable with Spirit of Yubel. Nightmare Pain has three effects, the first being a once per turn effect that lets you destroy a DARK monster in your hand or on your field to search Yubel or a card that mentions it except itself. Generally, you’ll destroy Spirit of Yubel since that’s how you access the original, and you’ll be able to search Eternal Favorite, your main disruption for now, in the process. Depending on your hand, you can also destroy a different Spirit of Yubel if you want to keep yours, or destroy Yubel itself to bring out Terror Incarnate if you really wanted to (not advised since Terror Incarnate doesn’t qualify as the original!). Thankfully, it’s a Continuous Spell, so on turn 3 you can use it again to search Geistgrinder Golem to secure the OTK. Nightmare Pain’s second effect forces your opponent to attack Yubel monsters if able as long as you control any Yubel monster, solving Yubel’s age-old nemesis: simply doing nothing. This’ll pressure your opponent into getting rid of your Yubels ASAP and might even force them into giving up their high attack monsters by Linking them off or some other method. That leads into Nightmare Pain’s last effect, which makes your opponent take any damage you would take from a battle involving a Yubel monster. This effect is huge, because not only does it grant Spirit of Yubel damage reflection (which it otherwise lacks), it effectively doubles the damage reflection of your other Yubel monsters, making it much easier to OTK. Just like with Spirit of Yubel, no effect of Nightmare Pain goes to waste, as all of them are incredibly useful. I’ve seen many lists run it at two since seeing it get removed is quite problematic, though on its own it can’t do anything.
+Essential combo piece that can search follow-up later
+Helps dish out huge damage
-Can’t start combos by itself
