I’ve got to hand it to the Duskmourn designers: a card like this is going to be effective at getting certain people to re-evaluate their parasocial relationship with drawing extra cards, probably more so than me writing about how there are other fun things in Magic. It’s a solid attacker, surprisingly hard for many decks to block, and fitting so well into Sligh-style mana curves and being the right color for Lightning Bolt variants means you have to give up nothing for the disruptive ability. And I won’t turn this into a soapbox about how Magic’s rules conventionally favor defensive decks – but they do, and first strike is a part of that, and I really like this new templating that turns it into something that lets 2/2 creatures attack with heart-fire.

I suppose contemporary horror references would not be complete without a nod to the Cenobites, right? Razorkin Needlehead has a pair of effects that pair well in terms of bringing the pain: it’s an efficient early attacker because of first strike, and the passive draw punisher can add up. It can add up quickly, as players naturally will be wanting to draw loads of cards, and there have always been decks that aim to punish card draws. Two mana makes Razorkin Needlehead one of the cheapest riffs on the effect, and it can even just sit back in the late game and dare an opponent to find an answer. I feel like its second effect will be why it gets played, but never count that first one out.
