My sister and I have a long-running joke about random numbers, inspired by a Dilbert comic involving a character saying the word “nine” repeatedly. This card is essentially a parallel concept, except there’s nothing random about it – it’s designed to be a keyword monster and almost unbeatable in combat. I think this particular combination of keywords is going to be quite effective at that; it even does a couple of things Questing Beast doesn’t, thanks to first strike and ward (as far as I know; Questing Beast has an awful lot of text!). Seven mana is even a more plausible ramp target than some high-cost keyword monsters, and while it probably doesn’t compete with the likes of Emrakul, the Aeons Torn in formats where she’s legal, there are formats with big mana decks where she isn’t.

Sire of Seven Deaths is certainly living up to its name, isn’t it? Don’t let the “relative” lack of depth in its rules text fool you, because this is a massive threat. Its mix of keywords ensures that it’s going to be quite tricky to remove outside of board wipes, and when it does get the chance to wreak havoc, it does so hilariously with a mix of words that let it plow through chump blockers, plow past defenses, and even defend well after it gets in there. As far as unsubtle, efficient beaters go, this might be among the best, thanks to how well it can both keep foes back and push the advantage.

That this costs seven mana also helps in another way, unlocking it to be used with the Tron lands and a lot of the more specific Eldrazi support that tends to kick in at higher mana values. While this might not be the absolute best seven-mana play, it’s still an excellent one, and I’d be surprised if this wasn’t a threat in Tron decks everywhere the land trio is legal.
