This is the sort of card where you look at it and wonder how it can be that none of the Innistrad-themed sets have done it yet. I think they may have been reluctant to put such a powerful sweeper effect into some of those past sets, and it makes me wonder what threats they think it’s intended to take out now. There are very few decks that will be able to withstand having it cast, even if your plan is to just have more than thirteen creatures at some point: someone can then cast Blasphemous Edict for one mana, then use all the mana they saved to kill whatever survived. And it’s worth noting that this card is just as good even when it’s not doing ridiculous stuff like that, because you would be fine with paying five mana for a card that said “each player sacrifices all creatures they control”, and that’s what this is much of the time.

Talk about a very black board wipe, and in a way that’s a bit harder to duck around. Blasphemous Edict comes with an interesting alternate cost, allowing for a pretty big swing back…though the caveat here is that there are some board states this won’t help against. Still, knocking out 13 creatures will usually knock out a big chunk of the board in one go, and forcing mass sacrifice is a good way to skirt around indestructibility and protections, since there are far fewer means by which one can mitigate forced sacrifice.
While casting this for one mana is ideal, don’t get suckered into thinking you need to wait for it to cost one mana; five mana is quite acceptable for a spell like this. The cheaper cost may seem appealing, but sometimes you need to cast this for its full price, and that’s perfectly reasonable. It’s a potent board wipe that isn’t quite perfect, but potent oft is good enough to see play.
