Gravecrawler has some very famous numbers on it – the first creature with such stats for this mana value was in Alpha, and despite having no other abilities, it turned out to be pretty good. The additional abilities Gravecrawler has obviously make it much more versatile and, unfortunately, sometimes overshadow its effectiveness in combat. But it’s very effective in either role: graveyard decks love it for equally fuelling cards like Mortivore and Dread Return depending on when they need it, zombie decks love it for fuelling their sacrifice and creature-counting abilities, and both of them appreciate that it can do a decent impression of a precedent-setting Alpha card when things get rough.

Gravecrawler’s ability to keep coming back has long made it a prime candidate for abuse; while Rooftop Storm is an obvious piece to pair with a sacrifice outlet (like Altar of Dementia and Phyrexian Altar), this is still able to keep coming back as a consistent source of pressure and enabler for plenty of strategies. It being a 2-[power creature that refuses to stay dead also makes it acceptable in a pinch offensively…it’s not likely to win any awards, but it can put in work that way if needed. That said, Gravecrawler shines brightest as part of very rude strategies as a result of just not staying dead for long, and that’s all you really need sometimes.
