That max speed ability will set off alarm bells in lots of people’s minds – it’s been dominating battlefields since the Tempest block, and I assume that’s why they put it all the way down the card, below Start your engines! which would have reminder text in some versions of the card. They want you to think it’s hard to get to the Ancient Tomb ability, and perhaps in one sense it is; but on the other hand, you will most likely have constructed your deck with the Raceway in mind and some kind of aggressive or damage-related plan. Plus, sometimes your opponents will help you out anyway with their own abilities, even during your turn. And overall, it’s just hard to argue with the fundamentals of the payoff. History tells us that a land that produces multiple mana is almost as dangerous as a Mox, and while Muraganda Raceway is probably not quite at the top of that archetype’s power rankings, I cannot envision a scenario in which such a card is actively bad.

faster faster go go go

Muraganda Raceway got a lot of attention from the outset because of it being able to produce two mana at once. Of course, it’s not that simple, and it relies on you speeding enough to get the speed needed to produce mana. On paper, you’d need three turns of attacks to get this up to speed and producing the extra mana…but once you’re there, it’s hard to lose speed, and this is not legendary.

Muraganda Raceway only produces colorless mana, so it’s not always going to be a perfect fit. But it does offer decks a bit of extra late gas, and that can be what some decks need to get across the finish line. There will be decks where this shines in particular, and I don’t see it going wholly out of style.

Of course, keep in mind that you just need to get to max speed once (usually), and this can come down after you get there to provide immediate speedy benefits. As long as you’re not revving up your engines for the first time on turn 20, this’ll be a welcome draw.
