King of Lullaby Hello Pojo Fans, Mathematician is now unlimited…and it doesn’t really matter. A Foolish Burial upon a Normal Summon and a draw when destroyed by battle. Both good effects, but in terms of the meta as it stands, Mathematician doesn’t do much to change or shake anything up. Shaddolls still don’t have Construct, Burning Abyss have everything they need. Many decks could use this card as a tech to get something in the graveyard, setting up future plays, and with a generic 1500ATK it will get run over by most monsters and give you the free draw. If you want, you can run into bigger monsters and get the draw the same turn you use its first effect, then get rid of your opponents monster with a higher ATK monster or effect. A good card, but much like when Whirlwind was put to 3, it doesn’t really do much for the meta. If Shaddolls had gotten Construct back with this also going to 3, then it would mean more. WarlockBlitz Mathematician is a Level 3 Earth Spellcaster-type monster with 1500 Atk and 500 Def. The stats don’t really matter, but 1500 Atk isn’t bad and neither is Spellcaster. Even without any support, Mathematician sends any Level 4 or lower monster from the deck to the grave upon Normal Summon. Then if he is destroyed and sent to the grave by battle, you get to draw 1 card. If the first effect gets Vailored, don’t try crashing into something yet. In any case, the combination of effects is very good for multiple current decks. Maybe not at 3, but it is an interesting tech choice. The draw effect is probably too slow and unreliable to be triggered often. However, the future potential of Mathematician is very high since there will always be every component of the effect. Score: 4/5 Art: 3/5 He’s not doing enough math. |
Crunch$G Another card this week that came from 1 to 2 to 3 like most cards that get limited at first, and one from the GX anime until we got the original Dragons of Legend, Mathematician. Mathematician is a Level 3 EARTH Spellcaster with 1500 ATK and 500 DEF. Stats are meh, but I kinda expect that from a Level 3. Spellcaster gives some good synergy, and EARTH is fine for an attribute. When Mathematician is Normal Summoned, you can send any Level 4 or lower monster from your Deck to the GY. There are so many good cards this can work with, I will only name a few. Performage Trick Clown is a good option as well as Performage Damage Juggler, Mezuki always thrives in the GY, Wulf or Felis can revive themselves from the GY once this sends them there, Shaddolls I believe can trigger from this as well as Ruffian Railcar if you are playing the Train variant. That is only to name a few cards Mathematician can send that will give you value, I could keep going. When Mathematician is destroyed by battle and sent to the GY, you can draw 1 card. Nice self replacing effect. These kind of effects don’t have to be busted to be good and honestly aren’t even necessary sometimes, this just makes Mathematician a bigger pain because the opponent would likely rather use an effect to remove this over killing it, and if they do attack and kill it, as I said, you get to draw a card and replace it. Mathematician is a great card that can find its home in many decks, most to all players should have some of these on hand. Advanced Rating: 4.25/5 Art: 3.75/5 Wise men know good math. |
Alex Searcy Mathematician, a Bastian card from the GX era, also moved, from Semi-Limited to Unlimited. Another move that could have happened about 60 cycles ago. He’s a good combo card, although he doesn’t do much on his own. You could argue he has gotten better with all the Spellcaster support that’s poured out the last several years. 1500 attack isn’t terrible for a Level 3 (though Earth kind of hurts a Spellcaster). The +1 for a Draw when sent to the Graveyard is good, but he has to be destroyed in Battle for that to happen. It does hurt, too, that you only get the ability to send the Monster (Level 4 or below) from your Deck to your Graveyard when he is Normal Summoned. You might have to be creative playing him to get one (if not both effects, which would be optimal) but he’s not a bad card. Rating: 3/5 Average, could be useful for some but useless to others Art: 4/5 |
Baneful With the card drawing, a graveyard effect from the monster he sends to the graveyard and a 1500 ATK body, he floats and potentially offers card advantage. He was limited a few years ago because he enabled Shaddoll and Burning Abyss, which were already the best decks at the time and didn’t need more support. However, as the game got more fluid, this card does have some more gaps than it used to. He needs to be destroyed in battle to trigger his effect, which makes it more like Mystic Tomato than Sangan. He takes up a Normal Summon and offers very little utility when Special Summoned. Various archetypes which needed what this card offers already received specialized support. |
