Frozen Rose – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review

Frozen Rose is something that would’ve made Plant decks even better years ago.

Quick-Play Spell that can net you a draw 2, discard 1, or a Level 4 or lower Plant from your deck. Simply amazing for Plant-based decks. Steal an opponents monster and send it with this to get your Plant RoTA, or send a monster of your own to get the effect(s) off. The End Phase draw then discard is a good balance for the card, and requiring you to send the monster to the grave prevents you from abusing tokens with this card, even though an added effect involving a token would have been appropriate. “Send” to the graveyard works great to get around destruction effects for your opponent monsters if you steal them and use this card. Cards like Spore, Lonefire Blossom, and Glow-Up Bulb can be searched out faster and start your combos. Tribute cards like those that are great in the graveyard to get the draw two and set up your graveyard.

Frozen Rose is a once per turn QuickPlay Spell Card that costs 1 face-up monster from your side of the field to be sent to the grave. Sadly no tokens, which would not have made this card broken in any way since it is once per turn. Anyway, for the cost, if it was a Plant, you get to draw two cards during the End Phase and then discard any 1 card from your hand. Seems too expensive to essentially draw 1 card, but drawing cards that can be searched are usually good. Or, if it was not a Plant, you can search for 1 Level 4 or lower Plant monster from your deck to your hand. ROTA with cost and once per turn makes it worse than ROTA. However, this can be searched and versatility of effects can be very helpful in multiple phases of play. Frozen Rose should probably be capped at 2 with some more generic draw cards, even 1 might be enough.

We looked at one of the two cards searchable off Red Rose Dragon, now we look at the other one, Frozen Rose.

Frozen Rose is a Quick-Play Spell that makes you send 1 face-up monster on the field and then apply an effect depending on the type of monster sent. You can only activate 1 Frozen Rose per turn, so remember that.

Plant: During the End Phase of this turn, draw 2 cards then discard 1.

Non-Plant: Add 1 Level 4 or lower Plant from your deck to your hand.

The Plant effect will probably be most useful when your opponent is going to destroy one of your Plant monsters or remove it from your field somehow, so Frozen Rose getting rid of it at a time like that will give you a benefit while your opponent wasted a card on the Plant you sent away. Drawing 2 is nice, though that discard 1 can sting if you don’t have anything you don’t want to discard. The effect of sending a non-Plant monster is more useful, especially since the Plant deck has some Dragons to add to its arsenal now, especially since this card can now search for Lonefire Blossom, and we all know how good Lonefire Blossom is in Plant decks. Predaplant Orthys Scorpio is another good option, but that can be summoned off Lonefire Blossom already, so you’ll probably search Lonefire Blossom most of the time. World Carrotweight Champion already in your GY might give you a good excuse to search for Spore or Glow-Up Bulb so he can discard them to revive himself. Having a Reinforcement of the Army for Plants is nice, and considering how good Reinforcement of the Army was, they clearly couldn’t just let you search for a Plant for free, so they made it a 2-for-1, but you can probably gain card advantage off what you search so it is fine. Frozen Rose has two good effects in decks with Plant monsters in it and if there is a Plant you really want to search and you play a good amount of non-Plants, then this is a good addition to your deck.

Also, I tried not to delve too far into this card on Monday, but alas, here we are.  Frozen Rose is a Quickplay Magic with two effects.  Depending on the Monster you choose to send to the Graveyard, you get one of two separate effects:

A Plant Monster given up nets you a Draw 2 during your End Phase, after which, you must discard 1, making this card a -1 technically.  You’re giving up this card, a Monster, and one of your two cards you Draw, making this a net -1.  Though we have played cards over the course of this game with far worse effects just to able to Draw two cards, haven’t we?

Any other Monster type you give up grants you a Level 4 or lower Plant type Monster from your Deck to your Hand.  This is a…more reliable resource, more than likely, for the player, as you get to control what you Draw, and you aren’t forced into a discard later.  As well as an instance grab for whatever Monster you need to make your play at the current time.

I like this better than yesterday’s card, but I’m still not overly fond of it.  The first effect just rubs me the wrong way, but maybe I’m overstating how ‘critical’ or bad that -1 is.  Anyway, I’d use one, but no more than one.
