Unearth has always been an interesting little sorcery; a one-mana reanimation spell is quite powerful, and a lot of the deeper formats tend to be heavy on creatures that are prime Unearth targets. In Modern, you have creatures like Tarmogoyf, Fulminator Mage, Scavenging Ooze, Dark Confidant, and pretty much the entire Humans deck, and getting those creatures back for 1 mana is amazing value. Unearth even has the upside of rarely ever being a dead card, thanks to cycling. It’s definitely a potent sorcery that one would be justified running four copies of, and its printing in Modern Horizons means good things for its prospects in terms of getting played. It’s already a powerful part of some strong decks (like the various flavors of Jund), able to give them a bit more late-game push, and it even can cycle away in the face of graveyard hate.

This is a card I always thought was likely to be too dangerous for a modern (or Modern) set. Now that I think about it – and have looked into what the Modern tournament format is like of late – that might not quite be correct. It’s obviously very powerful, as its cost restriction still includes some very powerful cards, many of which generate card advantage in their own right, but a single casting doesn’t generally end the game on its own. That’s quite all right: there are plenty of decks that have made a career out of small value plays that add up to a game-winning scenario.
