Raigeki – Yu-Gi-Oh! Halloween Throwback Thursday!

Throwback Thursday on Halloween leads us to a card that can still be terrifying if it resolves, Raigeki.

Raigeki is a Normal Spell that destroys all monsters your opponent controls and that’s it. So combo this with Dark Ruler No More from yesterday and you can make sure you can resolve this without it getting negated, because otherwise this is useless against multi-negate boards with the negations still in tact, cause you know your opponent won’t let this resolve if they can prevent it. It also stings now that a lot of monsters have floating effects or effects that trigger in the graveyard anyways, so those are monsters you don’t want to hit with Raigeki that much. With all that said, there are still a lot of monsters and some decks that are still afraid of Raigeki as a card as they can’t really counter it that much and their deck doesn’t like losing the cards they put on the field. Raigeki can give you a chance to get a direct shot at the opponent assuming it wasn’t negated or something destroyed didn’t float. Raigeki sadly isn’t the perfect card it once was, mostly since monsters adapted to being destroyed by effects and stuff, but it’s still very powerful against the right decks and a pretty solid card in OTK based decks.

Raigeki for Throwback Thursday, is more Halloween appropriate than it may seem (more on that in the artwork) but this card has seen two prior reviews.  One back in the infancy of the game in 02, and one in 14 (already 5 years ago) when it came off the Forbidden list back to Restricted status (links below):  I missed the 14 review, so this is a first for me too, and that’s fun.

This is nearly as simple as Pot of Greed, literally just destroying all Monsters your opponent controls.  Raigeki is able to be allowed in the game today because it’s not the broken beast it once was.  With an asinine amount of cards people WANT in the Graveyard, Graveyard trigger effects, etc etc, destroying a Field full of Monsters can actually come back and bite you in the ass, especially if you don’t win that turn.

Which, of course, goes without even adding assuming Raigeki were to resolve.  This (again) isn’t 2002, and with any of a million and one cards to negate or destroy a card before the effect goes off, wasting a Raigeki like that without getting the destruction almost brings a tear to my eye.  Still, can’t help but like this card, it can still be a game winner and get you out of a tight spot.  Love using it, hate it being used against.

Art:  5/5  Death from a lightning/thunder strike?  Yeah, that is a spooky way to die, and while the art (even in foil) isn’t spectacular, it is what it says.  Happy Halloween y’all

Hello Pojo Fans,

Raigeki is one of the oldest cards still seeing play in the game, even though for one of the easiest cards to play it doesn’t see as much play anymore.

All your opponents monsters gone with one strike of lighting, easy, simple, cost-free, devastating in olden times, devastating now if you play it. I play it in every deck and I can’t see why you wouldn’t unless you had access to a board-wipe effect within an archetype you run and were short on space in the main deck. This card I can’t believe lost such playability, much like Dark Hole, when both cards are so easy to use and so amazing. Cards that can cripple an opponent and don’t cost you anything are cards that can last a lifetime in this game and Raigeki is one of those, despite its drop in play.

Advanced-5/5- Never should it be anything less. Played or not, it does the job.
