Panglacial Wurm – Mystery Booster MTG Review

Panglacial Wurm is a unique black-bordered card inspired by Infernal Spawn of Evil from Unglued (and now Unsanctioned, of course). It’s the kind of effect that’s so unusual it tempts you to build around it, which is not always easy. You still have to pay its mana cost, but you get the flexibility of instant speed when you combine him with the likes of Evolving Wilds. You could look into alternate costs like Fist of Suns or Jodah, Archmage Eternal, which is only slightly easier than just casting him the old-fashioned way from your hand. The Wurm isn’t going to be winning any awards for efficiency or breaking formats, though it makes a good centerpiece for a fun theme deck.

Everyone’s favorite rules nightmare of exceptional length, Panglacial Wurm is an exceedingly weird card that begs for a way to break it. It’s uniquely the only card that can be cast off of a search effect, and a surprise 9/5 with trample is a pretty cute trick (even if seven mana is a bit of a tall ask), particularly when you can do rude things like pop a fetch land, put the wurm on the stack, and induce panic that way (as you can cast it at instant speed this way).

Admittedly, Panglacial Wurm is more “cute” than good. Seven mana is a lot to ask for, and a largely vanilla creature is an acceptable, albeit underwhelming, payoff for it.There will always be ways to attempt to break it, though, and I suppose Panglacial Wurm is a nifty curio in green decks if they have ways to go into their library often. Because while a 9/5 with trample might not look earth-shattering, it can be good enough to ruin an opponent’s day in short order.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Pojo’s Card of the Day! Today we’re looking at a sneaky wurm that plans on popping out from your library to give your opponent quite a shock!

So let’s take a look at Panglacial Wurm, his base stats are a fat 9/5 with Trample for… 7. Okay. But it has a neat ability that allows you to play him directly from your library if you’re searching for your library.

Now this seems pretty neat except for the fact that his mana cost is quite huge and on top of that to actually play him out you need to cast a search effect, the cheapest being 0 with an Evolving Wilds or 2 with a Rampant Growth.This is mainly a Johnny Brewer’s card that during its time in Standard showed itself as little more than a neat oddity combo deck.

In Limited this is mainly just a gigantic fatty that you want to drop down and hope to close out the game, chances that in a 40 card deck you’re going to draw this card before you get a chance to do it’s super special cast from your library ability. Overall a medium pick in Coldsnap Draft or the new Mystery Booster, but if you’re already in green this might be a decent pick up to drop down after your opponent has popped all their removal.

In Commander there’s a little more leeway with this card but even still 7 mana for a 9/5 trampler isn’t where you want to be putting your card equity and overall this should be ignored except for the most basic of groups.

In Cube this card shouldn’t really be considered, there are much better green payoffs than this guy even in low powered environments.

Constructed 1/5 – Not enough power to work here.

Limited 2/5 – A decent top end card if you’re in Green.

Commander 1/5 – There are better cards to use a card slot on than this wurm.

Cube 1/5 – Simply not worth playing unless it’s a super low powered almost pauper level cube.
