B.F.M. (Big Furry Monster) – Unglued MTG Throwback Thursday (1998)

If you’re willing to commit to it, the B.F.M. is a nice way to try and pummel an opponent into oblivion. It’s the precursor to Eldritch Moon‘s meld mechanic in that you need both parts to get the abomination locked away behind it, though you need both halves at the same time you’re committing 15 mana into it. I imagine Tooth and Nail would work to making this a bit of an easier task, and once you do get it out, a 99/99 that demands multiple blockers is a great way to end things.

Even being the biggest body in Magic isn’t going to completely save it from kill spells, deathtouch, or get it around a legion of chump blockers, and it does have one creature it flat-out gets walloped by (Infinity Elemental). But if you want to go silly, you can definitely have a good time using 99 power to pound your opponents senseless.

Casual: 3 (it’s fun, but you’ll have a hard time getting it to where you can benefit from its near-peerless power, and 15 black mana is a pretty steep ask)
Limited: 2 (if you get both pieces, you have it made, but one is useless without the other)
Multiplayer: 2.5
Commander: 3 (Tooth and Nail should work with this, but I’m not 100% sure)

Technically, not even Ikoria‘s kaiju are on this guy’s scale. But then again, the Un-sets operate on their own set of rules. As far as gameplay, B.F.M. is one of the best large creature you can possibly get in terms of attacking power – it’s technically possible to chump block, but three tokens or the like harder to come up with turn after turn than just one. Unfortunately, you’re more limited in terms of trying to actually get both halves into play at the same time. You pretty much either have to be fortunate enough to have both of them in your hand (and the small matter of fifteen black mana), or go outside of the silver-bordered world for a combo-style setup like Living Death or Tooth and Nail. It’s fun once you can pull it off – and it interacts amusingly with cards like Pandemonium and Greater Good.
