Hello Pojo Fans,
Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon, the King, is of course the #1 card of 2020. Overpowered from head to toe, this year started with broken Dark Magician support (Magicians’ Souls) and ends the same way.
This is the reason why decks are playing a copy of Red-Eyes Fusion, Dark Magician, and Red-Eyes Black Dragon. 3000ATK from the jump and target protection are strong starts for the card. Pop up to two opponent monsters during your Main Phase and do damage equal to their ATK. You will get one pop at the least, two if you use Dark Magician and Red-Eyes Black Dragon. Even though life points aren’t as important as they used to be, damage is still damage. This effect alone makes this card great, but then you stack the negation ability on top and REDD is overpowered. Negate once during either turn is powerful, but to stack 1000ATK permanently on top of REDD each time puts this negation ability above the rest. A 1-for-1 with the discard you have to do, it doesn’t feel like a break even when Dragoon is now 4000ATK. It’s unfair for a monster that has target protection and monster removal each turn to have a negation effect. It’s even worse for that monster to gain ATK each time it does that negation. The only thing holding back Dragoon is the number of cards in your hand. If you have no cards, you have no negation, but you still have that removal ability during your turn.
The excuse for countering Dragoon is to Kaiju it…you don’t always have that ability and sometimes those Kaiju are in your Side Deck, they can’t help you turn one of game one. Dragoon can end archetypes if it hits the field because of its sheer size. Don’t forget the card(s) you discard for the negation can pay off in the grave if your deck is set up like that.
Dragoon is broken, and I love it. Everyone plays it, but that’s because Verte Anaconda still is in the game. Get rid of that and poof! Dragoon will then be played in dedicated builds or within its own archetypes. Until then, all hail the King.

The first review of 2021 is here and we start with the best card from last year as averaged on by all 3 of us. It’s a card that dominated the OCG, and does well in the TCG despite the outs we have that the OCG didn’t have upon this card’s release, and our combo format doesn’t like using as many bricks. Either way, the card does see use. From the 2020 Tin of Lost Memories, we have Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon.
Dark Dragoon is a Level 8 DARK Spellcaster Fusion with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF. Great stats for the Level, DARK and Spellcaster is great as well. The summoning requirements are Dark Magician and a Red-Eyes Black Dragon or any Dragon Effect Monster. If using Red-Eyes Fusion, you’re stuck with Red-Eyes Black Dragon, but either way it’s easy to summon and makes specific materials worthwhile. It cannot be targeted or destroyed by card effects, which already a great start with great protection, though it’s Kaiju fodder like most bosses. During your Main Phase, you can destroy a Monster the opponent controls and burn the opponent equal to the destroyed Monster’s original ATK, where this effect can be used up to the number of Normal Monsters used as material. No hard once per turn here, so multiple Dark Dragoons should be able to use all their pops, which creates easy OTKs. It has another soft once per turn, meaning multiple Dark Dragoons are useful, and it’s a Quick Effect where you discard a card to negate the activation of an opponent’s card or effect and destroy it, and if destroyed this gains 1000 ATK. Gaining ATK to 4000 and beyond for a Monster that has that insane protection, popping for burn, and negation is great. It’s an insane card that, while it didn’t dominate the TCG format like expected, is still going to be played in Decks that have no business running it by just using bricks and Predaplant Verte Anaconda, or you can find a variety of different ways to summon this. It’s an insane card that could use a limit early on so you didn’t need to deal with multiples, and one of several cards from the year worthy of an eventual ban as banlists take care of meta Decks to where this becomes one of the most popular go-tos.

Art: 5/5 It’s sick, which I’d hope a Dark Magician and Red-Eyes Fusion would be.
My #1: Crystron Halqifibrax

#1: Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon
Position on my List: #1
So it wasn’t a great list for Alex, but I got the #1 card, so I’ll take it.
How happy am I to see this card and Dark Magician’s continued rise to prominence and beyond be #1? You can answer that for yourself. Level 8, Dark/Spellcaster, 3000/2500 atk and defense, and needing Dark Magician + REBD or a Dragon Effect Monster. The open end there on the second half of the Fusion requirement makes this easy to use in MANY Dragon hybrids. Knowing that you don’t need to use both these cards. And there’s countless Dark Magician hybrid Decks out these days too. Can’t be Destroyed or Targeted by card effects. So you’re only getting over this thing in Battle. A Burn effect lets you destroy an opponents Monster dealing Damage equal to attack of said Monster. Per Normal Monster Material used for this Fusion, and note, this isn’t a once per turn effect, so use as much as you can. Then a Dark Paladin on steroids effect (via Quick Effect) lets you once per turn discard a card to negate the activation of a card or effect, destroying said card if you’re successful AND granting this guy an extra 1000 attack. He’s perfect. I mean, sure, he’s not invincible, but he’s damn good at a lot of things, and he IS a tough one to get off the Field.

Art: 5/5 This is just majestic. Everything from the armor, the staff, the background, it all plays perfectly off each other.
