As Dominaria‘s Mox Amber proved it was possible to make a (mostly) fair Mox, Lotus Bloom before it is a powerful argument that Black Lotus’ game text is not inherently broken. Yeah, I was shocked too. It helps that storm decks have been a thing throughout all of Lotus Bloom’s existence: obviously, if your deck has a critical turn where it’s going to do everything after some setup, you can often wait until then for your Black Lotus. You don’t see it as much in tournaments outside of a combo deck like that, but there are plenty of cuter interactions in casual play, like fuelling a turbo-powered turn for a creature with prowess or getting put into your graveyard by Pull from Eternity as step two in a longer process.

Another part of the “iconic card with no mana cost” trope that Living End and Restore Balance belonged to, Lotus Bloom aims to emulate Black Lotus. It has the obvious “degenerate” uses alongside As Foretold and Electrodominance, but it’s actually seen “fair” play in both Storm and Eggs over the years. While the effect is undeniably powerful, you do have to jump through hoops if you want to cast it without waiting, and three turns is a fair amount of time to wait to get three mana. It’s always been a hard sell in a fair deck, since those decks tend to either kill or be killed before this card resolves, but Lotus Bloom has a fair amount of power if you play around its strengths and weaknesses, and it’s more the side show than the main attraction.
