As we know well by now, many of Magic’s older vampire cards focused on the flavor of gaining strength from blood and life force, most notably the original Sengir Vampire (today’s card’s namesake). We’ve since had other cards that portray other elements of vampire legend, particularly in the various Innistrad sets, but the Nosferatu here was the first such card. It works great in flavor terms, and can be surprisingly effective in combat: not only does it basically never die to targeted effects, back in Time Spiral combat damage used the stack and it could kill anything with four toughness and survive. That doesn’t quite do enough in competitive Magic, but anywhere else, you really have to watch out lest it take over combat completely.

As far as flavorful creatures go, Sengir Nosferatu is top-tier that way, turning into a bat to avoid things that would trouble it (like targeted removal). A 4/4 with evasion and, with mana, the ability to dodge kill spells on command is pretty awesome. Unfortunately, the way Sengir Nosferatu’s worded means that it will still fold to board wipes, and you do need mana up to keep Sengir Nosferatu swooping gratuitously. It’s not good in today’s game, but it is fun.
Constructed: 1.75 (a 5-mana 4/4 without haste is a tough sell in Modern)

Limited: 4.75
