I wonder why we’re suddenly getting werewolves in a Forgotten Realms set. Maybe someone at Wizards of the Coast is a fan of Malar the Beastlord? You’d all better head over to Scryfall and check what the next set is . . .

Regardless, the Pack Leader is a card with a very high floor and a potentially high ceiling, too. Even if you’re only getting its baseline stats, those stats recall Watchwolf and Kalonian Tusker before you factor in the abilities – and both of its abilities can give opponents a very hard time indeed. The card-drawing one is easy to reach in the right deck, and becoming a 5/3 trampler as an activated ability is a great way to pressure an opponent without committing any further cards into possible counterspells, and/or remaining nightbound. (That sentence might make a lot more sense in a couple of weeks!)

A soft Curiosity effect is nice if you have enough power, and Werewolf Pack Leader can empower itself to get close to that mark, making it with just one more power. All the same, a 3/3 for two mana that can conditionally become a 5/3 with trample is nice (and a good trick in combat), and it’s even in a tribe with upcoming support. It’s not flashy, but it does a good amount, and I’d be surprised if this didn’t see play in the upcoming Standard.
