Hello Pojo Fans,
Pot of Greed…what does it do? Memes aside, this is a staple and I will keep this short.
Draw 2 cards, a +1 and the best draw card in the game with possibly the only exception being Graceful Charity. If it were legal there would be not a deck in the game no matter the tier that wouldn’t play this. No downside to playing PoG, no cost, no restriction, no discard. Played literally in every deck until it was banned, this is another former staple that could only be stopped by the ban list. Can’t see it coming back unless they errata it to be something like “Pay half your LP and end your turn after playing it” kind of effect…and everyone would still play it.
Best staple in the game if legal. Got stuff to negate it nowadays, but it still can’t be errata’d or brought back, far too powerful.

Oh man, what’s there left to say about Pot of Greed?
Pot of Greed is a Normal Spell that lets you draw 2 cards… that’s it. It’s a card that’s spawned several retrains like Pot of Desires and Pot of Extravagance to let you draw 2 cards with specific restrictions, which Desires was strong enough still to be limited to 1 recently despite the fact it banishes 10 from your Deck face-down. If we can only have 1 copy of a similar card with such a restriction, then there’s zero odds for Pot of Greed coming back. Draw 2 is a concept many players like to explore with those generic cards or archetypes getting their own Destiny Draw like card to discard an archetypal card for the draw 2. Pot of Greed will always be the original and will likely stay Forbidden for the rest of time barring some errata, but Konami seems more interested in retraining the card over errataing it thankfully. If it ever came back, this is one of few universal staples the game has, so you’ll play whatever number the game allows you no matter what you’re playing. Draw 2 is just that good.

^^I’m kinda still with the bottom here, but I understand more, and this isn’t as random or as last time, it totally has a place in this week. A generic, free +1 for the player, and retrained about 6000 times now with various Costs and Effects, usually resulting in Drawing 2 cards (occasionally something different, maybe shuffling into the Deck, or returning cards from place to place) but the original has been Banned for years, and likely won’t ever see the light of day again. It might be fun to be released for a Format just for those players who haven’t gotten to use it, and that’s gotta be a lot at this point. If it ever comes back, it’ll be in about 99.99% of Decks. (There are some wacky, off the wall Decks that actually don’t/didn’t use it, usually to personal choice, no Magic Decks or some such) but I mean, an extra, free card can’t be a bad thing. Sometimes, the job is easy y’all

Love it for its iconography or hate it for spawning a joke that plagues the Yugioh community to this day, Pot of Greed is easily one of the most iconic cards, not just in Yugioh, but in popular culture in general. Its effect is simply 3 words (well, 6 in old prints): Draw 2 cards. Despite the apparent innocuity of this effect, Pot of Greed is forbidden for a fairly valid reason. It’s a straight-up, non-once per turn +1 with no downsides whatsoever. One could argue that it is “vulnerable to Ash Blossom”, but so is almost every other search or draw card in the game; if anything, this makes PoG even stronger since it can function as bait for Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Bringing it back to 1, much less 3, is a hotly-debated topic, with many arguing that such an iconic card shouldn’t be forbidden. Others argue that it devolves the game into praying you open Pot of Greed for a 6 card hand. Personally, I don’t think Pot of Greed coming back to 1 would be the end of the world, but I completely understand why it’s forbidden. 95% of decks can use Pot of Greed with no downsides whatsoever; the only exceptions would be decks with absurdly tight main deck space, but even then, there’s nothing wrong with running a 43 card deck with 3 Pot of Greeds since they’ll replace themselves– and more! Hence, Pot of Greed has the honor of being my first 5/5 review on Pojo.
