Hello Pojo Fans,

Plaguespreader Zombie is the Throwback Thursday choice and was once the most popular Zombie in the game.

Highly splashable even today, Plaguespreader is the standard low ATK/DEF Level 2 Tuner that happens to have a great effect. Just one card on top of your deck to Special Summon this and then it is banished when it leaves the field, this was an incredible effect long ago. Any deck that was doing Synchro Summoning played with the idea of using Plaguespreader, many of which ended up doing so, but none used it better than Lightsworn and dedicated Zombies. Lightsworn mill so much it didn’t take long to get access to Plaguespreader, and Zombies can plow through their deck with Mezuki, Goblin Zombie, Zombie Master, and Pyramid Turtle. Even when it was at one copy per deck it was a menace, and Burial From a Different Dimension made multiple uses of Plaguespreader. You found Plaguespreader in DAD decks, DARK-based strategies, even gimmick decks revolving around Monster Gate and milling certain cards. Lightsworns stacked Wulf on top to mill it with Charge or a Lightsworn in the End Phase for the easy Special Summon. Zombie Master, Book of Life, Pyramid Turtle made multiple uses of Plaguespreader before Plague even used its own effect. The card was at one because having multiples would have been ridiculous, especially when there wasn’t any Link or Xyz Summoning.

Been several years since Plaguespreader saw Tier 1 play, however, it will always remain a good card in its own right and go down as one of the better Tuner monsters in the game’s history.

Throwback Thursday this week brings us to the classic Zombie Tuner: Plaguespreader Zombie.

Plaguespreader is a Level 2 DARK Zombie Tuner with 400 ATK and 200 DEF, so same statements for Mad Mauler apply here. Plaguespreader is a simple card that just returns a card from your hand to the top of the Deck to revive this card, but it’s banished when it leaves the field. This used to be one of the best Tuners in the game, to a point where it was even limited at one point. Now it’s at 3, so you can easily swarm more Plaguespreader Zombies on the field for Synchro climbing. Being Level 2 at least gives you Halqi access while that’s legal. Plaguespreader Zombie has always been a decent card for Synchro climbing, though it now resides mostly in Zombies and maybe some Halqi combos. Still a worthwhile card to run.

Oh no! I missed pretty much the whole week, but that’s fine since Friday’s card will bring them all together anyway. Throwback Thursday is a classic power Tuner, the illustrious Plaguespreader Zombie, a level 2 DARK Zombie Tuner monster. You already know where this guy’s going as a Zombie Tuner, and being level 2 lets you access it with Crystron Halqifibrax. Predictably, it has an atrocious 400 attack and 200 defense, which don’t really matter for a combo piece. While you can’t access it with Shiranui Solitaire, there’s fortunately no real point in summoning it off of Solitaire anyway.

Plaguespreader’s effect is simple but powerful, being limited at one point for its role in Zombie Synchro decks. Notably not once per turn (though it sort of makes up for it), you can Special Summon Plaguespreader from your Graveyard by placing a card from your hand on top of your deck, though it’ll be banished when it leaves the field. I can’t stress enough how excellent reviving from the Graveyard is in Zombie decks (duh), but to simplify, Gozuki and Uni-Zombie are both able to dump it to the Graveyard from the deck and let it revive itself. While placing on top of the deck is usually worse than discarding (hence the power of Jet Synchron), it can help put garnets back in the deck if absolutely necessary. Zombie Synchro decks can instantly make Immortal Dragon by dumping Plaguespreader with Gozuki, or Uni-Zombie can make Crystron Halqifibrax. P.U.N.K. decks have been seeing a lot of success using Plaguespreader Zombie, since it being level 2 can matter a lot against Jet Synchron being level 1, so even after all these years, Plaguespreader is still a great Tuner.
