Hello Pojo Fans,
A Legendary Ocean is our Throwback Thursday choice this week, even though there are a few “Umi” imitators that we could’ve looked at.
Field Spell that is always treated as “Umi”, A Legendary Ocean expands the reach of the small ATK/DEF boost to any WATER monster, while taking away the punishment to Pyro and Machine monsters (wasn’t consequential so no loss). Not all WATER monsters were Aqua, Fish, or Sea Serpent, and while Thunder monsters lose out, you weren’t playing this in Thunder Dragons. The Level drop of one was the big thing that made this card good when it was released 2003, suddenly Level 5 and 7 WATER monsters were playable, and even now this card could see some play because of that level drop even in the age of board spamming.
The problem is, there have been more “Umi” imitators created, and they do more. Lemuria can manipulate the levels of all WATER monsters during your Main Phase, allowing for Extra Deck shenanigans, while Magellanica will move a WATER monster to the top of your deck and can provide a banish from your opponent’s hand until the End Phase, allowing you to see what they have. Pacifis may be the best one though. While it could lock you out of Special Summon or Normal Summon of effect monsters when you activate either of its effects, it can provide you once per turn with a 2000/2000 Level 8 token each time your opponent activates a card effect. All said though, if you “Umi” imitator and not many bells or whistles, this could get the job done.
This Field Spell doesn’t do enough now to be a dominant force for WATER monsters and there are far more ways to Special Summon than in 2003. Despite that, A Legendary Ocean had its time and it was a fun card to use to get unplayable monsters some time on the board.

Throwback Thursday is one of the many cards that always treats itself as Umi, since Umi itself is very bad, so here we got A Legendary Ocean.
A Legendary Ocean is a Field Spell that is always treated as Umi, so you can play this instead of Umi. All it really does on the field is give all WATER monsters a 200 ATK and DEF boost and a level reduction of all WATER monsters in hand and on field by 1. It’s not much, but it does its job to make some WATER monsters easier to summon. It’s fun to just slap a The Legendary Fisherman (either the orignal or second) or a Terrorking Salmon on the field without tributes or to summon Levia-Dragon – Daedalus with 1 less tribute, but not much benefit outside of that. Still a nice benefit at least, cause I’d like to summon Ocean Dragon Lord – Kairyu-Shin with no tributes. A Legendary Ocean is the best “Umi” in dedicated Umi strategies, but it isn’t too crazy either.

A Legendary Ocean is a fun one to review for Throwback Thursday. A Field Magic who also becomes Umi, with a negligible atk/def increase of 200, but the beneficial Effect of lowering the Level of all your Water Monsters by 1. Both player’s Monsters, so long as they’re on the Field or in your Hand. It helps with a handful of the specific Boss Monsters, depending on your Water Theme, and the Level aspect here is certainly the most useful. Dropping high Level Monsters more easily, and could help you with the Extra Deck (but then again, I suppose you can argue that could hnder them as well). EMoD use to say unless you’re VERY specifically running Water that needs Umi/ALO, it’s not necessary in most of your Water Decks. I’m inclined, even after so many years to agree, and ALO is a middling Field Magic. While hardly a bad Field Magic, and definitely better than Umi, there’s nothing st and out great about this either.

Throwback Thursday brings us a card many old-school players are probably familiar with; A Legendary Ocean (which is always treated as “Umi”, thankfully!) is a Field Spell that increases the attack and defense of all WATER monsters on the field by 200, as well as reducing their levels by 1 on the field and in the Graveyard. You will almost never see a use for the stat boost (though it does let Gogiga Gagagigo exceed the 3k attack threshold to beat over most boss monsters), but the level drop is invaluable for Umi-based decks, considering Ocean Dragon Lord – Kairyu-Shin is a level 5 monster, so you’d be able to Normal Summon it. I’m gonna say it outright, the original Umi Field Spell is just really bad, so there’s practically no reason not to run A Legendary Ocean over it, especially considering you can search ALO with Warrior of Atlantis. The level drop can screw with Rank 4 plays, but honestly in Umi decks you’re better off trashing your Extra Deck with Pot of Prosperity and Extravagance than going for Stealth Kragen or Sharks. Overall, while it’s not the best card in a vacuum, you’ll definitely still want to run 3 in Umi decks, if only so that you don’t have to run the original Umi.
Brenn’s Corner: 3/5. You run it because you have to, but at least it’s decent at that unlike Sanctuary

Art: 3.25/5 Yugioh Field Spell landscapes have gotten a lot more sophisticated over the years, but there’s a nostalgic charm to ALO, with the dark shading being very reminiscent of old Yugioh art.
