Hello Pojo Fans,

Power Tool Braver Dragon is the newest Power Tool form of the original and the end of our Morphtronic week.

Generic materials like its predecessor, Power Tool Braver Dragon, instead of searching and adding to the hand can equip up to 3 Equip Spells from the grave or Deck to itself. Previously mentioned yesterday, the utility of Power Tool Dragon was that it was able to search an Equip Spell for an archetype and advance that archetype’s play. Equipping Spell cards to it means you’ll need some generic Equip Spell cards, or ones that allow PTBD to be equipped. It is two levels higher and only 200ATK/DEF higher than its predecessor, doesn’t sound like it is worth the effort. In the set though there is an Equip Spell for Power Tool Dragon and PTBD, “Life Extreme”, that will help things, but much like Power Tool Dragon, it doesn’t feel like a boss monster, but more like a means to an end.

You can trade and Equip Spell to change the battle position or negate the effect(s) of an Effect Monster each turn, and it being a Quick Effect gives you a negation, something Power Tool never had. You still need Equip Spells attached to PTBD, and it can only do that itself when it is Special Summoned. The “Bamboo Sword” cards come to mind as generic targets for this effect, as well as old school cards like United We Stand and Mage Power. However, unless your deck is built around that kind of stuff, you’ll be running archetype-specific stuff and that won’t normally be equippable to Power Tool Braver Dragon.

There’s a spot for this monster somewhere, however, I don’t think in Morphtronic. Power Tool Dragon can do its generic search thing and benefit the archetype as it can do with others, this one can’t. For all that isn’t the best about this card, it does have a negation ability and that is worth the mention.

Power Tool Dragon evolves once again as we end the week with a new Power Tool Synchro: Power Tool Braver Dragon.

PTBD is a Level 9 EARTH Machine Synchro with 2500 ATK and 2300 DEF. For a Level 9, I would of hoped for more than Power Tool’s original stats just being swapped, but EARTH/Machine remains a plus. We got yet another generic Synchro that needs any Tuner and non-Tuner(s), so that’s good. Upon being Special Summoned, you can equip up to 3 Equip Spells with different names from the Deck and/or graveyard to this card, which is great to instantly get some powerups on this card and to make the second effect live, which is a Quick Effect during the Main Phase to send an Equip Spell equipped to this card to the graveyard to target an Effect Monster on the field and either negate its effects or change its battle position. The battle position bit is to probably use all the effects of your Morphtronics, but you’re more likely using the negation effect to interrupt the opponent from making plays of their own. This effect is at least good with Earfon continuously returning from the graveyard to reequip to this over and over. Each effect is a hard once per turn, which is fair here. Power Tool Braver Dragon is a better upgrade than Life Stream Dragon for the classic Power Tool at least, and something that’s worthy of playing I feel like, unlike Life Stream Dragon.

Advanced Rating: 3.5/5

Art: 4.5/5 I see Life Stream Dragon finally decided he should keep using the old Power Tool armor he had.

Power Tool Braver Dragon (that’s just stupid name wise) is an upgraded (?) version of PTD.  The only differences initially between here and yesterday are Level 9 instead of 7, and 2500-2300 so inverted atk/def.  Straight up, dependent on Equips or not, 2500 on a Level 9 is AWFUL.  When Special Summoned (note not just Synchro, but Special) you can Equip up to 3 differently named Equip Magics from your Deck and/or Grave to this card.  That IS a good thing, even a modest attack boost from all three (or even 1 or 2) should net this guy at least to 3000+ attack.  Being able to come from your Deck instead of just the Grave is fabulous, and is a nice way to potentially reuse some Equips you may have already used or lost.  A Quick Effect lets you detach an Equip to Target an Effect Monster on the Field.  You can either change the Battle position of that Monster OR Negate its Effect(s) until the End of the Turn.  Both those options are fun.  You’re shifting something from a mode you weren’t strong enough to destroy to the mode you (ideally) can, OR, neutralizing an Effect(s) that were hindering you.  Sometimes, you just need that moment to escape or get around that Effect for your own play.  It IS better than the original PTD, that’s for sure, but appropriate as it is for it to be Equip dependent (and better utilization of them here is great) it’s still just not quite there.

Rating:  3.5/5

Art:  5/5  The art, color, and overall feel of this pic just give me the vibes that PTBD is pissed.  Maybe that’s just the fire and the attack pose, but it looks rather menacing.

Closing the week is a card that didn’t see as much hype as Morphtronic Telefon, but still caused quite a scare before rulings calmed the masses; Power Tool Braver Dragon is the new boss of the Morphtronic archetype, being an upgraded version of Power Tool Dragon. Much like its predecessor, only two levels higher, it’s a level 9 EARTH Machine Synchro monster, though it has the inverse stats; a mediocre 2500 attack and 2300 defense for a level 9 Synchro. It’s also completely generic, requiring any Tuner and non-Tuners, so while Morphtronics still struggle to summon it in a clean manner, you can summon it with any level 9 Synchro decks or engines, like Virtual World or the Assault engine.

Braver takes the original Power Tool Dragon to its logical extreme; upon being summoned (hard once per turn!), you can equip any 3 valid Equip Spells with different names to it from your deck or Graveyard. This caused a lot of buzz before Konami clarified the Equips had to be valid, so you can’t just equip Grid Rod to make it unaffected. In terms of good targets, Moon Mirror Shield, Mage Power, Power of the Guardians (beater Equips), and Metalsilver Armor + Supermagic Sword of Raptinus (total targeting protection) aren’t bad choices. You can even run a Bamboo Sword package to draw two cards (equipping Broken Bamboo Sword and Soul Devouring Bamboo Sword, which also comes with the bonus of letting Braver attack directly) if you really want to. Braver’s other effect is also a hard once per turn and is a Quick effect; during the Main Phase, you can send an Equip Spell equipped to Braver to the Graveyard to target a monster on the field and either change its battle position or negate its effects until the End Phase. On your opponent’s turn, having a monster negate is always handy. On your turn, you’ll usually use this to trigger the Bamboo Swords or enable your Morphtronic combos, if you’re playing this in Morphtronics. While losing one of your Equips is a downer, at least it has some disruption this time around. Compared to the original Power Tool Dragon, I don’t think it has as much combo potential, since you can’t effectively use Living Fossil after directly equipping it. There are stronger level 9 Synchro monsters out there, and while Braver isn’t bad, it just feels outdated, especially when you see how overtuned Morphtronic Telefon is. I do think it has potential in Infernoble decks to get access to the Infernoble Arms, but that’s about it.

Art: 4.5/5 Takes the original Power Tool and gives it the modern Yugioh oomph, I like it!
