You can discard this card, and 1 monster or “Vernusylph” card; send from your Deck to the GY, 1 EARTH monster that can be Normal Summoned/Set, then you can Special Summon 1 EARTH monster from your GY with a different name from that monster, also you cannot activate non-EARTH monster effects for the rest of this turn. You can target 1 “Vernusylph” monster you control; its ATK becomes doubled until the end of this turn. You can only use each effect of “Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests” once per turn.

Vernusylphs are up this week as we look at this little archetype starting with Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests.
Awakening Forests is a Level 4 EARTH Fairy with 900 ATK and 1800 DEF. Not the greatest stats for a Level 4, but EARTH and Fairy is super popular now. First effect lets you discard this alongside any other monster or Vernusylph card to send from your Deck to the graveyard any EARTH monster that can be Normal Summoned or Set, then you can Special Summon an EARTH monster with a different name from the graveyard than the sent card. It’s a nice Foolish Burial effect for nearly any EARTH monster while being able to get a revive, which while it can’t be the card you send, you can summon whatever you discard or any other EARTH monster in the graveyard. You can’t activate non-EARTH monster effects for the rest of the turn, which is unfortunate somewhat, but you can at least summon those monsters for the opponent’s turn. Second effect also lets you target a Vernusylph monster you control and double its ATK for the turn, which is ok, but only one monster has stats worthwhile already while the rest become okay beaters with stats that are subpar to okay for their Level. Does at least help you get some damage in. Each effect is a HOPT. Awakening Forests is fine, mainly for the discard effect in many different EARTH strategies, which honestly goes for most of the Vernusylph monsters, but it’s a good card for the EARTH Attribute.

We’re still not done with Power of the Elements! This week covers the little-known Vernusylph archetype, which has not gained quite as much attention as the other archetypes introduced in the set. Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests is their first card, a level 4 EARTH Fairy like the rest of them. Recently, Konami has been trying to shore up EARTH Fairies for some weird reason, but the main boons for them aren’t available in TCG yet. For a level 4 monster, Awakening Forests has a paltry 900 attack and a decent 1800 defense, so it’s not going to be doing much combat.
All level 4 Vernusylph monsters share a similar first effect, which is a hard once per turn. By discarding both itself and another monster or Vernusylph card, Awakening Forests will mill any EARTH monster that can be Normal Summoned or Set from your deck, then lets you Special Summon any EARTH monster from your Graveyard (with a different name from the one you searched, anyway) at the cost of locking you into EARTH monster effects for the rest of the turn. This effect is pretty loaded, but the important thing is that it can be a valuable extender in monster-heavy EARTH decks; Infinitrack and Naturia come to mind, not to mention the Vernusylph deck itself. Not being able to revive the monster you just milled is very strange, however, and I don’t think it would have been particularly broken considering the EARTH effect lock is fairly harsh. Awakening Forest’s other effect is comparatively less exciting and also a hard once per turn, letting you target one of your Vernusylph monsters and double its attack until the end of the turn. As every Vernusylph monster except the boss (which is only 2400 attack itself) has pitifully low attack, you’re likely intended to combo this with tomorrow’s card to use external bosses, though it’s pretty clunky. Overall, not a bad card in a vacuum and certainly one you’d use in Vernusylph, though I think it’s overbalanced and has a mediocre second effect.

Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests starts our look at the Vernusylph archetype.
Archetype of smaller EARTH monsters that all do a double discard to get their own effect as well as a Special Summon of a grave EARTH monster, Awakening Forests can Foolish Burial an EARTH monster that you’re able to Normal Summon/Set. This sets up a next turn Special Summon from any of your Vernusylph archetype monsters, or even this turn, you juust aren’t able to Special Summon the monster through Awakening Forest. You sadly can’t go after powerful boss EARTH monsters because they are usually never able to be Normal Summoned/Set. Despite that, you are thinning the deck with Awakening Forests and setting up a summon that likely will happen the next time you activate a Vernusylph monster effect.
Doubling the ATK of a Vernusylph for the turn helps the lower ATK monsters get a bump, while you can boost the biggest within the archetype: Vera the Vernusylph Goddess up to 4800ATK. Vernusylph in Full Bloom can boost all your Vernusylph monsters by 1000ATK…but you need 5 or more EARTH monsters for that. While that can be done in this archetype, it isn’t practical.
Vernusylph of the Awakening Forests is a good start to the archetype. Gets you directly to something you want from the Deck and put it in the grave where any Vernusylph can Special Summon it in the same turn. Doubling the ATK effect for a Vernusylph monster is a good boost effect when attacking directly, should’ve probably been a Quick Effect if they wanted to make it better.
