Hello Pojo Fans,

Laevatein, Generaider Boss of Shadows gives Generaiders another archetype Xyz monster for their Level 9 business.

Two or more Level 9 monsters much like Jormungandr, only Laevatein has established ATK/DEF and Jormungandr doesn’t. Only control one copy of this monster fits with the archetype restriction of having multiple copies of any of the monsters out at once. The 1000ATK/DEF drop Laevatein has as a Continuous Effect helps with it having low ATK/DEF for a Rank 9, giving it the ability to get over anything up to 3400ATK, that’s pretty good.

Tributing as a Quick Effect offers you a fail-safe option if you want to avoid losing your monster. Tribute itself to Special Summon Jormungandr and attaching cards onto “Jorm” up to however many materials Laevatein has attached when tributed is a fantastic way to get rid of monsters your opponent has or rob them of cards in their graveyard that they may be depending on. You’ll likely only attach two cards to Jormungandr, but I’d say that’s a fair trade for your Rank 9, especially when you consider Jormungandr’s Quick Effect that will end up getting rid of another card from the opponent’s hand or field through forced attaching to this card. Jormungandr replacing the detached material with an opponent’s card takes away a resource, and you attaching one as well through that effect will net at a minimum of three attached materials, giving your Rank 9 3000ATK. Your opponent draws off of the “Jorm” effect but you take a card away so it balances out.

Generaiders needed another Xyz monster and got a “lesser” Xyz to help them get to their big boss Xyz. Laevatein can hold its own in battle and the more materials you have on it the more Jormungandr will have once you tribute Laevatein to Special Summon Jormungandr. Keep this monster out as long as possible and then tribute it. For Generaider monsters, this checks all the boxes for helping the archetype.

Midweek brings us some of the first piece of Generaider support in a few years, offering a new Rank 9 to make up for the fact that True King of All Calamities is no longer legal, so now you got Laevatein, Generaider Boss of Shadows.

Laevatein is a Rank 9 FIRE Fairy Xyz with 2500 ATK and DEF. Stats are alright for a Rank 9, but they could be better, and the combination of FIRE and Fairy is very strange to say the least. It takes any 2+ Level 9s to summon, so generic and you can use as many materials as you want. You can only control 1 of it, which is standard for Generaiders. All your opponent’s monsters lose 1000 ATK and DEF, so it makes your opponent’s monsters weaker to make up for the 2500 stats on a high Rank, though there should be several scenarios where it’s 3500. Finally, we got a Quick Effect to tribute this Xyz Summoned card to Special Summon a non-Fairy Generaider Xyz from your Extra Deck and then attach materials to it from either field and/or graveyard to it up to the number of materials this had when tributed. A fairly strong card considering it can disrupt the opponent by absorbing two of their cards onto your new Xyz, which as of this review the only other Generaider Xyz is Jourmangandir, which is fine enough but makes it hard if you already control it and want to summon another one of this. Still, it’s a strong effect that gets better if the Generaider Xyz pool ever expands with non-Fairy monsters. It’s probably going to be your go-to Rank 9 for Generaiders now.

Art: 4/5 Generaiders overall do have pretty cool artwork usually.

Generaider gets another boss with Laevatein, Generaider Boss of Shadows. Laevatein is a Rank 9 FIRE Fairy Xyz monster, which is a pretty unique combination, though being Rank 9 is no surprise for a Generaider monster. With requirements of any two or more level 9 monsters, Laevatein is completely generic, and if you have the Extra Deck space, isn’t a bad idea as a generic Rank 9 option either, as we’ll see later. With 2500 attack and defense, Laevatein’s stats are balanced, if a little low for its Rank, but it has a way around it.

Oddly, you can only control one Laevatein at a time, though it makes sense given that its single activated effect is not once per turn. While on the field, Laevatein drops the attack and defense of all of your opponent’s monsters by 1000, giving it a beefy effective stat spread of 3500 attack and defense. Laevatein’s single activated effect is, as stated, not once per turn and is a Quick Effect, letting you tribute it while it’s Xyz Summoned to Special Summon a non-Fairy Xyz Generaider monster from your Extra Deck, then attach cards from either field or Graveyard to that monster as Xyz material for each Xyz material Laevatein had. Currently, the only target is Jormungandr, Generaider Boss of Eternity, and since Laevatein will usually have two Xyz materials, Jormungandr will thankfully start with at least 2000 attack and defense. This effect is a huge boost for Generaider as a pure deck, as Laevateinn sucking up two cards from the field or graveyard can be incredibly powerful disruption. It’s an excellent option for boardbreaking as well, since it doesn’t target and bypasses destruction protection. Essentially, there is no longer any reason to blindly make Jormungandr. While it’s no True King of all Calamities, it’s also a solid generic Rank 9 if you have the space to spare for Jormungandr as well. Overall, another excellent archetypal support card, continuing Konami’s graceful trend of revitalizing decks that have fallen by the wayside.

Art: 3.75/5 Funnily enough, this is probably the first male (?) personification of Laevateinn I’ve seen in media so far.
