Hello Pojo Fans,
Needlebug Nest is quite the Throwback Thursday choice. This card debuted all the way back in 2008…some of you weren’t even alive at that point while some of us were younger individuals in a game that was half a decade old at that point. “Send” is a key word here, as it will activate many effects now in the game. Going back into the archives, Lightsworn decks could tech this in as a slower way to get more LIGHT monsters into the grave while Charge of the Light Brigade was Limited to 1. This was also when the Dragon Rulers still were at one copy each, giving Needlebug Nest more reason to be played in Lightsworn or other decks that revolve around the graveyard. Infernoids a year later used this card to fill their graveyard to fuel their Special Summons and even as recently as last year we saw Paleozoic Tearlaments using this to fill their grave. Oh, and Skull Servants used this as well in 2017, have to mention it because Skull Servants have a following.
It is slow in today’s game, and even back then it couldn’t keep up with certain cards. Needlebug Nest though is splashable in any deck that wants to get cards into the graveyard and only their graveyard. If you are willing to wait to get the effect off (though players play Normal Traps all the time and are fine with their speed), this card can be worth the wait.

Throwback Thursday this week brings us to a milling target for Tearlaments since they would be looking for more with Kelbek and Agido both put to 1, so here’s Needlebug Nest.
Needlebug Nest is a Normal Trap that lets you send the top 5 cards from your Deck to the graveyard. Extremely simple, and probably the most milling you can get from a single, generic card considering That Grass Looks Greener is currently banned in the TCG. It’s fine to trigger some graveyard effects you might want to trigger on the opponent’s turn, or it can trigger effects on the field that trigger when cards are sent to the graveyard. The main issue is the little bit of RNG to it for it to be a Normal Trap, which is pretty slow. It’d certainly be better as a Spell, but I don’t know if Konami wanted a Spell that milled 5 and had no real activation condition, hence it being a Trap. Milling 5 should make it fairly likely you mill something good, but it isn’t close enough of a guarantee that something like Grass was. It’s an alright card still, and it can certainly find a home in some Decks if you can work with it being a Trap, so give it a try and see how it goes.

Ishizu Tear format may be over, but Throwback Thursday brings a quirky call-back with a (figurative and literal) Trap Card, Needlebug Nest, from way back in 2008 in the TCG. Needlebug Nest is a Normal Trap with a single simple effect, sending the top five cards of your deck to the Graveyard. On paper, it sounds like a three-of staple in Tearlaments decks; it mills, and can do so on your opponent’s turn, triggering your Tearlaments and Ishizu card effects much like Kelbek and Agido. Despite this, the main reason it didn’t see play is simple: it’s not worth running over faster alternatives. Agido and Kelbek are relatively easy to trigger and give immediate value, whereas Needlebug Nest has to be set for a turn. In Ishizu Tear format, every card in your hand counts and needs to generate immediate value to keep up with the speed of other Ishizu Tear decks. It can be a funny tech for casual duels, but that’s why you didn’t see it in tournament builds. Even with the Ishizu monsters limited, Needlebug Nest still isn’t used due to its slowness going second and having no value when milled. Amusingly, Needlebug Nest does have a home in Paleo decks, which are naturally slow and still get mileage off of milling. Overall, not useless, but a tragic victim of the game’s breakneck pace, as most decks that could run it have better cards to run.
