Hello Pojo Fans,

Rescue Cat was the bane of the metas existance at one point for a good while and is our Throwback Thursday choice this week.

X-Sabers enjoyed using this cuddly monster to overwhelm the opponent with double Airbellum. Back then, having cards discarded to the grave was a terrible thing to happen to a player, but erratas changed how good RC was. Rescue Cat found itself on the banlist for a long time. Now, like many powerhouse cards for archetypes a decade ago, they are unlimited and it means nothing in the current meta due to expanded card pools and erratas.

Send RC to the grave for two Level 3 or lower Beast monsters from the Deck, both of which are vanilla and are destroyed in the End Phase. Getting two monsters for the price of one out of your Deck is very useful: Rescue Cat is a one-card Link 2, Rank 3, Synchro 4-6 maker depending on what you are running, and its effect can resole under negations because it resolves in the graveyard, making Skill Drain or its teammate Debris Dragon great tech choices. It has seen sparce play in decks since its original dominance and pre-errata days, however the card is, as many legendary powerhouses become: watered-down to be made playable.

I think the original Rescue Cat could exist in todays game without being a problem. There is so much negation that could prevent it from activating, priority is long gone, and archetypes have the power to bounce back with ease. Not only that, many of the cards that helped Rescue Cat be as powerful as it was have been limited or banned. Regardless, Rescue Cat could see play again and be meaningful, it just needs the right archetype and sadly X-Sabers don’t seem to be the one anymore.

Throwback Thursday this week gives us a great card for Tri-Brigade variants to use in order to access their Beast monsters: Rescue Cat.

Rescue Cat is a Level 4 EARTH Beast with 300 ATK and 100 DEF. Those stats are of course bad, but being an EARTH Beast isn’t terrible at all. So you can send this monster you control to the graveyard to summon 2 Level 3 or lower Beasts directly from your Deck, but they’re destroyed during the End Phase. A great effect to get bodies on board to help make a Synchro, Xyz, or Link play with the greatest of ease. It gets you to the Tri-Brigade Links at the very least, you can make a Rank 1, 2, or 3, or you can most likely summon EARTH monsters to try and Synchro Summon a Naturia Beast or Naturia Barkion. All that is pre-errata, and the post errata is basically the same, except the effects of the monsters you summon are negated and this effect is now a hard once per turn, which makes this card far more fair and less prone to loops. It’s still a great card for Beasts easily, basically a staple if you run Beast monsters and want to go into the Extra Deck, but it’s a fair version of the pre-errata version.

Advanced Rating: 4/5 (5/5 for pre-errata)

Art: 4/5 for the original art and 5/5 for the alternate art, Rescue Cat was always cute, but the alternate art is just perfect.

Throwback Thursday hits us with the ever-popular Rescue Cat, foreshadowing tomorrow’s card. Part of the Rescue mini-series, Rescue Cat is a level 4 EARTH Beast monster, which isn’t an uncommon combo but doesn’t really point towards anything in particular. With a meager 300 attack and 100 defense, Rescue Cat probably won’t be fighting anything, so just stick with using it as a combo tool.

Rescue Cat has a single hard once per turn effect, sending itself to the Graveyard to Special Summon any two level 3 or lower Beast monsters from your deck, at the cost of negating their effects and destroying them during the End Phase. Even post errata, it’s not hard to see how powerful this effect is; being able to pull any two Beast monsters from your deck enabled all kinds of combo lines, and technically still does. Tri-Brigade decks can instantly access Tri-Brigade Kit and Tri-Brigade Kerass, easily going into a Link Summon and kickstarting combos. Negating the effects is a very fair trade-off; with formerly vicious Beast combo pieces like Uniflora, Mystical Beast of the Forest, you could perform multiple FTKs, and even in conservative combos Rescue Cat could easily enable the summon of Naturia Beast, which still sees play in the modern age. Prior to its ban and eventual errata, Rescue Cat did not negate effects and it wasn’t once per turn either, which meant Uniflora could continuously revive it and you could pull all sorts of Beasts from your deck for degenerate combos. Nowadays, while much weaker, Rescue Cat is still a very solid playmaker for Beast decks, especially Melffy and Tri-Brigade, making it a shining example of a proper balancing errata. On another note, sending itself as cost means Psy-Framegear Gamma is a popular buddy for Rescue Cat, since it’ll protect it from Ash Blossom. Meow!
