Spiritomb (SV Paldea Evolved 89/193) would have been an insanely useful card if it was debuted earlier. A Basic Psychic type with 60 HP, Darkness weakness, Fighting resistance, and a retreat cost of C, it has an ability and an attack. Its Fettered in Misfortune ability states that both players’ Basic Pokemon-V in play have no Abilities. Fade Out costs C for 10 damage and makes you put this Pokemon and all attached cards into your hand.

The range may seem small as it doesn’t affect Pokemon VMAX, Pokemon-ex, and non-Rule Box Pokemon, but Basic Pokemon-V is still a decent chunk that Spiritomb can negate. Genesect-V won’t be able to draw cards; Lumineon-V won’t let you fetch for a Supporter card; and even my favorite partner of Sylveon-V and/or Leafeon won’t be able to fetch for an item card or to accelerate Grass Energies!

Despite being half as useful, Spiritomb has seen some play from certain decks. Though the ones that were placed were during Japan Championships 2023 (looking at Limitless again). One of them was from a Gardevoir deck while the other two were Lost Zone variants. So far, that’s good enough for me. And it’s a good thing that Spiritomb can be splashable in any deck.
