Hello Pojo Fans,

Vanquish Soul Jiaolong is the one Vanquish Soul we’ll take a look at this week and enjoys the heat.

Special Summon ability through revealing something in your hand for an effect, something that all Vanquish Soul monsters do…so Jiaolong is getting Special Summoned. Level 5 with 2400ATK are good stats, but its Quick Effect revolves around FIRE Attribute monsters like him, Pluton HG, and Razen. Changing the battle position of a monster via revealing a single FIRE monster is alright to bait out a negation or, if it goes through, give you an easier out with many boss monsters having quite low DEF. Using Dust Devil to change Jiaolong to defense so you can Book of Eclipse your opponent’s field just for Jiaolong to target himself and get back into ATK could work, though you can easily Special Summon him in defense and do this play as well.

Revealing two FIRE monsters turns Jiaolong into a searcher for your Vanquish Soul cards, the arguably better effect. Being able to use each effect once per turn is nice so you don’t have to pick and choose between effects if you really needed the search, but also needed to get something off the field. If you have Razen in combo with Jiaolong, you can use the search through Jiaolong to allow for Razen to get off both of his effects in the turn by searching a DARK monster: clearing a column is a big deal. Fitting that they work so well together and both search for your deck.

You want to be able to get that search effect off because Jiaolong will get you to whatever you need and while not the strongest in terms of raw power or control, Jiaolong is important to the archetype consistency even with Stake Your Soul! in the build at three. With potentially seven different Vanquish Soul monsters in the Main Deck and three of them FIRE the level of consistency where you have two FIRE monsters is up to the deck build.

Next up we got a brand new player for the Vanquish Soul archetype to expand the arsenal: Vanquish Soul Jiaolong.

Jiaolong is a Level 5 FIRE Wyrm with 2400 ATK and 2100 DEF. Pretty good stats, FIRE is getting better recently, and Wyrm is a solid typing. First effect lets you Special Summon this card from the hand if you revealed a card in your hand for a Vanquish Soul card effect, except in the Damage Step. Yet another bigger monster to be able to Special Summon in the archetype to go with Heavy Borger and Caesar Valius. It’s also a better FIRE name for Vanquish Soul than Pluton HG is off this and the other effects it has, which is the standard reveal for varying effects as a Quick Effect with you being able to reveal 1 FIRE monster to change the battle position of a monster on the field or instead you can reveal 2 FIRE monsters to search any Vanquish Soul card. The battle position ability is fine, helping make sure your Vanquish Soul monster isn’t destroyed in a battle potentially. The search is pretty good as well, just as long as you got the FIRE monsters in your hand, which is helped with Razen, Dogoran, Ash Blossom, Kurikara, and maybe a Kashtira Riseheart you’d play to search off of Fenrir. Hard once per turn on each effect and can only use 1 effect per chain, standard VS stuff. Jiaolong was the second FIRE VS that the archetype needed to replace Pluton, it’s a much better card. The Special Summon ability is easy to trigger and the reveal effects aren’t half bad, especially the second one. It’s worth a few copies in the VS Deck.

Vanquish Soul Jiaolong joins the fight as a level 5 FIRE Wyrm monster, accessible through Stake your Soul! and Vanquish Soul Razen as usual. Incidentally, being a FIRE monster gives Vanquish Soul another excellent FIRE target for Stake your Soul!, and you can never have enough FIRE targets to get to Razen. Being a Wyrm doesn’t do much other than helping you double down on There Can Be Only One, though. For a level 5 monster, Jiaolong has a respectable stat spread of 2400 attack and 2100 defense, which is welcome since Vanquish Soul can have a bit of trouble maintaining field presence due to its playstyle.

Jiaolong continues the VS tradition of having two hard once per turn, one per chain effects, though I don’t imagine it’d come up often anyway. Unlike Vanquish Soul Heavy Borger and Vanquish Soul Caesar Varius, Jiaolong has a different summoning condition, Special Summoning itself if you reveal any card for a VS effect. Pretty much every VS monster will be able to trigger Jiaolong, so it’s essentially a free body unless you brick horribly. Jiaolong’s other effect curiously requires either one or two FIRE monsters to be revealed; one will let you change the battle position of any monster on the field, while two will let you search any VS card except itself. The first one isn’t exceedingly useful, though I guess it can help out Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon if you’re up against it? The second is much more useful, and can work in tandem with Vanquish Soul Dr. Mad Love to fetch more names along with Vanquish Soul Dust Devil, one of your main disruptions. My only complaint is that revealing two FIRE monsters might not always be live; you have Razen, itself, and Ash Blossom, as well as potentially Kashtira Riseheart through the Fenrir package (we don’t talk about Pluton), though it’s not necessarily guaranteed. I’ve seen a lot of lists opt to play three copies and even cut a copy of Dr. Mad Love to increase the odds of opening FIRE monsters, so even if there’s a brick chance, three is probably the magic number.

+Easily-summoned body and extender
+Can reduce reliance on Dr. Mad Love
-Summoning condition can be bricky
-Needs a high count of FIRE monsters to get the most mileage
