Otaku

We’ve looked at this card before, so even I had time to present an updated view on it.  Just remember that my time constraints mean I haven’t seen much since the State Championships.

Name   : Power Tree

Set       : EX Legend Maker

Card#   : 76/92

Rarity   : Uncommon

Type    : Trainer

Sub-type: Stadium

Effect Text: This card stays in play when you play it.  Discard this card if another Stadium card comes into play.  If another card with the same name is in play, you can’t play this card.

Once during each player’s turn, if the player has no Special Energy cards in his or her discard pile, that player searches his or her discard pile for a basic Energy card, shows it to the opponent, and puts it into his or her hand.

Power Tree didn’t look like it had too bright of a future in the current Modified when I first saw it.  Most decks ran and still run at least a few Special Energy cards, making it rather risky to rely on this effect.  Though the effect is nice, as it reduces the impact of discarding basic Energy cards and it makes it easier to run multiple Basic Energy types together, there are other Trainers that do a better job of reclaiming Energy in the short run (and the long run if Power Tree gets discarded) and aren’t so down on Special Energy usage.  It doesn’t help that the deck’s that run multiple types, and thus are more apt to want this card, are also the decks that will need to run Special Energy cards like Double Rainbow Energy, Rainbow Energy etc.  Still, I did see it used a bit in certain decks that did discard a lot of Basic Energy cards and wanted to retrieve them and that will keep its rating from going down, though it’s not enough to warrant raising it.

Ratings

Unlimited         : 1.5/5 – It does do something, but I’d think you could find a better Stadium in this format, especially given that there is even more Special Energy use here than in Modified.

Modified          : 2/5 – It does do something, and I think there are a few obscure card effects that could benefit from this.

Limited            : 3.5/5 – Bingo, we have a winner.  Although you must be cautious, reclaiming the Energy discarded for numerous things is quite, quite important, and you can’t just choose to run Rainbow Energy (unless you pulled a copy).  As long as you aren’t running Special Energy cards (or aren’t like me and keep having to use the lone React Energy you pulled), the problem here will be the opponent will likely be able to do the exact same thing.

Power Tree

Not a very strong stadium, if your opponent also runs a basic + holon pokemon engine then they could benefit too. Only good in Flygon where the energy returned can be delta supplied back on but then Chimecho does that.

Unlimited- Not that good here, since most decks play special energy. Rating 1.5/5

Modified- This card was good last season when LBS was around but now most decks play special energies. Rating 1.5/5

Limited- Good card to have here since you will most likely not pull a special energy to use, however this card can help you opponent get that 1 energy they need from the discard pile to help them win the game Rating 2/5

Now I don’t run this myself card myself
Cause I run too many special energies, but The decks I have seen it been used in do make Good use of it. One example is when you use A trainer that makes you discard, like t.v reporter You can jus discard an energy then get it back with power Tree. If your only using 1 or 2 Special energies try it out.

Power Tree

Gets you one energy back every turn...but no special energy in your discard pile...

Not always that easy of a trick with double rainbow, multi, rainbow, scramble, dark, metal, and delta rainbow energy (I am sure among others) making this stadium worthless.

The good news is, for decks ONLY playing basic energy, this could work quite well. What a great way to mentor, discard basic energy, and power tree it right back...didn't the LBS (Lugia Blastoise Steelix) deck ABUSE this card?

Other good news...the holon's pokemon do NOT count as special energy cards in the discard, so you could play power tree with Holon's Castform or Holon's Electrode sitting in your discard.

All in all, a pretty tough trainer...

Unlimited...in the "raindance" style decks that only use water energy, usable, everything else, not really...2/5

Modified...too few decks that use only basic energy cards, but when it works,....it WORKS! For decks that like this power, and use special energy, Chimecho may be a better play here (as it gets back delta rainbow) 2.5/5

Limited...Hey, not too many special energy played here, but you and your opponent get to use it...not a horrid trainer. 3/5

Wow, 2 in a row...can't wait for DP!

See you all soon!

Power Tree

Ah, Power Tree. This Stadium brings back many many memories. Once per turn, you can get a free basic energy from your discard pile back to your hand as long as you don't have any special energy cards in there. This card was used in every LBS deck back in '06. But it isn't 06, it is a new year, 07, and this card has lost a lot of power.

It is very difficult to find a deck that doesn't use special energy cards anymore, and most decks don't even get into stadium wars anymore, we have windstorm(which also gets rid of nasty Cessation Crystals).

All in all, it lost a lot of power, but it can still fit in a few decks.

I won't rate unlimited, cause I don't play unlimited =*(

Modified: 2.5

Limited: 3/5
Trainer cards always help in limited, but you will already be playing so many energy that this may not come in handy at all

Random deck that it could fit in: Maybe some sort of Typhlosion ex UF/Rayquaze ex DX deck.

Power Tree - Legend Maker

Hey there, I'm Greenzangoose for another COTD. Today’s COTD is one that is easy to use but hard to abuse. Power Tree is a stadium (duh) that has a great effect, but has other better stadiums to take its place. The best place for Power Tree is in a deck that can abuse energy (like BLS (Blastoise, Lugia, Steelix) or a deck that has Holon pokemon as its only special energy. This card will get better once Diamond and Pearl come out as Metal and Dark energies will be basic.

Pros -
Recycling your energy (always good to recycle.)
Easy to use
Holon's pokemon aren’t affected

Cons -
Better stadiums (like Holon legacy, or battle frontier.)
Windstorm (Dang you windstorm...)
Can't use special energies (Which metal and dark won't be once Diamond and Pearl come out.)

Unlimited - 2/5 there are better stadiums, but this has a little bit of comboing ability with base Blastoise.

Modified - 3/5 there is still better stadiums, plus you have windstorm running around. But you can abuse those dang Holon poke's easily with this.

Limited - 4/5 has lots of use since special energy won't be around much.

That all until next time...

garsh0p 5/2 Power Tree

Very few decks play pure basic energy nowadays. Chimecho seems to be a better choice for most decks if they need to retrieve energy from the discard, as having a Holon supporter in play is a lot easier to do than to have no special energies in the discard. Chimecho also lets you pull Delta Rainbows in addition to basic energy. This card doesn't really have a place in today's metagame.

Today’s Card Of The Day is…Power Tree from Legend Maker

I am really beginning to like this stadium. With the ability to use castform and the Mag/Trdoes as multi energy, you will be ably to play power tree and have a continual supply of energy. Thus reducing the amount of energy needed in a given deck. Add the fact that metal and darkness will now have basic energy forms, due to rule changes, and power tree becomes even more playable…example Flygon d and Raichu d Attach a metal energy from hand. Then use your power to attach another metal energy (because it’s a basic) and metallic thunder for 90, next turn get 1 energy back. You will be able to metallic thunder again.

Combos: Use with the Holon engine for discard, then power tree it back.

Modified:  3/5 a good stadium now with future potential.

Limited: 4/5 being able to retreat and still keep your energy will win many games

Current ebay Value: $.75 (Plus or minus .75 cent)

P.S. Jeff Reynolds is the best T.O. EVER!
