7/23 Manaphy Lv. 20 (BK Promo)
Before the review today, I have 2 apologies to make. The
first is on Monday, I said there was only 1 non-DP
reprint in the BK Promo set, when in fact there are 2
(Pikachu from yesterday, and Happiny from MT). This
leads me to my second apology, which is I was a bit too
generous on Pikachu yesterday. I forgot Magneton (PK)
was still in the format, which is an infinitely better
card for retrieving Basic Energies. Pikachu deserves
only 1.5/5 for Modified because of Magneon's
superiority. For both of these mistakes, I am truely
sorry.
Anyway, no mistakes today with the third best BK Promo
(according to use COTD reviewers anyway) with Manaphy, a
reprint of the DP version. Anyway, it's HP and bottom
stats are unspectacular. 70HP on a non-evolving basic,
and especially a legendary, is frankly, average. +20
Weakness to Lightning is annoying, but not a threat to
the card due to the amount Lightning is played, which is
almost zero, no Resistance which is obvious, and 1
Retreat Cost, which is average. So basically, not the
best card in the world yet. And the attacks don't make
it one, I'm afraid. Call For Family is like any other
bad Call For Family attack, getting only 1 basic instead
of the 2 or 3 required for a good CFF attack. Aqua Ring
can save Manaphy from trouble, but 30 for WW and a
forced switch for it's only source of damage is rubbish.
To be honest, this makes it a rubbish card, and can't
really do anything. It's the worst type of CFFer you can
get, and is a slow hit-and-run card, needing 2 Waters
and can't be powered up by DRE either. Both attacks have
good alternatives. Pachirisu (GE) is the good
alternative for CFFing, getting 3 basics as opposed to
1. for hit-and-running, well, it's never really a good
thing, but Donphan (SW), despite being a Stage 1, is
probably the best of the lot, since it also makes your
opponent switch, but most hit-and-runners are rubbish,
and there's never really a need to using them (well,
there is one deck I can think of, but it isn't relevant
here).
Manaphy can't take a hit from most attackers, and thus
that running part of Aqua Ring is irrelevant to the
attack, since next time it's active, it's KO-ed
basically.
Ratings:
Modified: It's useless. Seriously, there's no good
reason to use it, so shoe box it (or folder it if you
are collecting DP/BK Promos). 1/5
Limited: CFF here, even for only a single basic, is
quite good really. Aqua Ring is still useless really,
but at least 70 HP might be able to survive a hit or 2
rather than being KO-ed straight away, but still... If
you keep this after the tournament, you are going to
regret it quickly. 1.5/5 |
