Jigglypuff13 8/1 Munchlax Lv.7 (MD)

Hello and welcome to August and another MD common being reviewed for the end of this week, Munchlax. Now, er, I don't know how to put it lightly, so I'll just come out and say it: it's rubbish. You may now be asking, "Why is the card rubbish?". Well, first of all, it's a Baby Pokémon, and Baby Pokémon recently have never been useful (go back to when they were first introduced, and you will find they were useful), but this one does have something going for it that others don't, which is 60 HP, where as all others only have 40 HP normally. However, that slightly better HP, which isn't even that great really, is the last of the good things of the card. The first bad thing is that Weakness. +10 Fighting is just saying to all of the Gallade (SW) players (and there still are a lot) that they can attach a DRE to Gallade and not flip any Prize Cards to get the Prize Card for KOing Munchlax. Doesn't sound like a lot, but GG and Plox decks are still played in large numbers, and thus is a massive threat to this card (and most cards really, but that isn't the point). Next, no Resistance is standard, but 2 Retreat Cost on any Basic is bad, but on a Baby, it's even worse. Basically, you are never going to be Retreating without the help of a Switch/Warp Point. Then there's the attack, Lick. CC for 20 is plain rubbish, and even the possibility of Paralysis doesn't make it any better.

So it isn't an attacker, isn't that great at surviving hits (every deck can do 60 damage for a OHKO against this card, so it's isn't going to be a basic tank) but, it does have another ability, and it shares with every other Baby Pokémon: Baby Evolution. It heals it, which is great, and evolves it to it's Basic form, which for Munchlax, is Snorlax. This is good if there is a good Snorlax in the format, and unfortunately, there isn't. There 2, but both are absolutely rubbish. First, the DF one, which heals itself and puts itself to Sleep with it's Poké-Power, and deals passive damage so long as it remains Asleep. With no real attack and only a 50% chance of dealing damage in between turns, it isn't going to be a damage dealer. With 80 HP and a x2 Fighting Weakness, it isn't going to be a tank either. In fact, it isn't good either, it's just plain bad. The DP one doesn't get much better. Block can provide nice disruption for a bit, until your opponent plays a Warp Point/Switch, but Ease Up is just rubbish. CCCC for 40 and putting itself to Sleep is bad. +30 if it's evolved from Munchlax doesn't help. Still, it can be a bit of an early game tank, with 100 HP and only a +20 Fighting Weakness, but that's only until the main attackers get out and 1 or 2HKO Snorlax (DP).

So Munchlax is rubbish and has rubbish Evolutions. There is another Munchlax in DP, and is a bit better then this MD one, mainly due to being able to discard cards from your hand, which helps a few cards, like Fire Starters and Garchomp Lv.X and can, with a bit of luck, deal some nice damage, which makes it a lot better than the DP one  at everything really.

Modified: It's rubbish at everything. The only thing it's got going for it is a slightly higher HP than all other Baby Pokémon, and that's not enough to make it any good. Even worse, it has no good Snorlax to evolve to. If you were using Snorlax, you'd be better of using the DP Munchlax, which has a slightly useful attack. 1/5

Limited: 60 may see it survive a hit or 2, but don't expect too much survivability. Lick is still too over priced to be any good, and with Snorlax to evolve into, there's no real point in play Munchlax. 1.25/5
