Bronzong Lv 49
Bronzong is another Pokémon that the card designers seem
to love. We now have FIVE of the Stage 1 in the Format,
plus TWO SP versions!
This particular Bronzong comes with the very useful
Metal Typing (Special Metal, with its damage reduction,
is one of the best Special Energies in the game). It has
a solid, but not spectacular 90 HP, Weakness to Fire
(not good), and Resistance to Psychic (very useful). As
you would expect, it has a big Retreat cost so be
prepared.
Unfortunately, what it lacks is one of those PokePowers
or Bodies that have made previous Bronzong semi-useful
techs (for example, Bronzong MD in spread decks).
Instead, this Bronzong relies on its attacks alone to
give it playability status. Sadly, they aren’t much
good.
Well, maybe that’s a bit unfair. Oracle Arrow will do a
nice snipe for 40 damage on anything that already has
damage counters on it. Useful for taking out Pokémon
that have been retreated to avoid imminent KO, or
knocking out 50 HP Basics with Crobat. If you want to do
that, though, you are much better off with Honchkrow G,
which does the same job, only faster (it is a Basic),
and is able to benefit from SP Support.
Bronzong’s second attack, Antigravity, makes some
attempt to mitigate the horrible Retreat cost by giving
Bronzong free Retreat on your next turn. That’s nice,
but with a cost of [M][C][C] and a damage output of only
60, it’s an attack which is much too slow and weak to be
worth bothering with.
Maybe the designers are falling out of love with
Bronzong. It certainly doesn’t look as if they wanted
this one to see much play.
Rating
Modified: 1.25 (Close to useless. There are so many
Pokémon better than this)
Limited: 2.25 (the snipe can be useful, and speed is
less of an issue)
