Old Amber
Ever since they changed the ruling on Fossil Basics so
that they gave up a Prize when they were KO’d, Fossils
have seen a huge drop in playability. Then Gastly SF,
Dialga G and Spiritomb AR came along to give the
archetype even more problems by bringing Trainer Lock
into the game.
Even for a Fossil, Old Amber is very hard to play,
thanks to the lack of the word ‘Fossil’ in its name.
This means that even Relicanth GE and Fossil Excavator
can’t search it out, forcing you to rely on topdecks,
straight draw, or Kabuto MD’s flippy Power to get the
card in your hand. There are a few other ways of
searching it, such as Farfetch’s SF’s Go and Collect
attack, but these are very rarely seen.
Assuming you manage to get Old Amber on to the Field,
its Hard Amber PokeBody does give it some protection, as
it does not take damage from any attacks whilst on the
Bench. In theory this could work with attacks that have
recoil damage (like Luxray GL LV X’s Flash Impact), but
even here there are much better ways of avoiding it
(Bench Shield, Quagsire GL, Manectric PL, or simply
using Poke Turn on what you damage).
In the end though, the extreme difficulty of searching
for Old Amber is so destructive to deck consistency that
it has ensured that a very good evolution, Aerodactyl
MD, has seen pretty much no competitive play since it
was released. That in itself should tell you how much of
a problem card Old Amber really is.
Rating
Modified: 1 (a Basic that you can’t search out? That’s
completely horrible)
Limted: 1.25 (meh, you can’t search for much in this
format anyway)
