OK, a basic SP Pokemon with 70 HP, weakness to fighting,
resistance to psychic, not too big a deal, right?
My son SWEARS that the level X is the play. I haven’t
seen it, and will calmly wait to be stunned, just need
to check this card.
First attack, 20 for 1, 30 to the active with a special
dark. Can’t be reduced by Energy Gain, so 20/30 for 1,
and a bench hitter, so OK.
Second Attack…do we need to ask the question? If the
Defending Pokemon Evolves, Levels up, or is benched,
does the Doom News Effect go away? If history is our
teacher, then yes it does. If the ruling goes that it
stays…even if you go to the bench, then we have a very
interesting little attack.
Until that shocking ruling takes place, this card is a
pile of crunk.
Modified…1.5/5, and I am hoping the level X makes it
worth that .5
Limited…2.5/5 sniping is a little more important here,
and there is not as much evolution, so it could be
playable. We will have to see.

Absol G
Ok, just how many cool Pokémon does Cyrus own? Dialga,
Palkia, Charizard, and now Absol . . .
Like Staraptor FB, Absol G is a card that people have
been waiting for mainly because of the LV X with its
flippy, but still scary, power to send cards from your
deck to the Lost Zone. The Basic form of Staraptor FB
which we reviewed on Monday wasn’t really much good.
Will Absol G be any better?
Well, 70 HP for an SP Basic is . . . a little below
average if anything, and that Weakness to Fighting might
be a problem (watch out for that Toxicroak G promo!).
Resistance to Psychic is very welcome though. Any
Resistance is good, and Resistance to a popular type is
brilliant (and pretty rare). The Retreat cost of one is
never going to be an issue.
The first attack, Feint, is a snipe attack for the low
cost of [D] (which means no Energy Gain,
unfortunately). It can be a useful way of finishing off
a heavily damaged benched Pokémon, but it has no real
power during the early game, which is when Absol G is
likely to be active without being levelled up.
The second attack, Doom News (please sack the
translator), has got a fair bit of attention. For the
relatively high cost of [D][C][C] and the return of all
attached Energy to your hand, you cause the Defending
Pokémon to be knocked out at the end of your opponent’s
next turn. Sounds good huh? Well, unfortunately, it is
very likely that this attack will have the same rulings
as Jirachi LA’s very similar Doom Desire. In other
words, all your opponent needs to do to avoid the KO is
evolve, level up, or simply retreat their Pokémon to the
safety of the bench. This makes the attack extremely
unlikely to work against a decent opponent, and severely
hurts Absol G’s effectiveness.

Modified: 2 (not terrible, but it’s the LV X you want in
play)
Limited: 3.25 (Doom News might actually work here)
Steel

Welcome back to the Pokemon COTD!
Today's card is Absol G from the upcoming Supreme
Victors set, and one that has gotten a lot of attention
for it's LV. X. But how does the standard card fare?
Let's see... 70 HP on an SP Pokemon is dismal; almost
any good attack will OHKO this guy. A x2 Weakness to
Fighting is good news for any Fighting-type, and Machamp
can Take Out for KO, even with an Unown [G] on Absol G.
A -20 Resistance to Psychic gives it a little bit more
survivability, but not much. A Retreat cost of 1 is
manageable, though between Moonlight Stadium and Poke
Turn, I doubt you'll ever really have to pay it. It's an
SP Pokemon, as mentioned earlier, so it can use Energy
Gain and the rest of the support it has out there.
No Powers or Bodies, but there are 2 attacks. The first,
Feint Attack does 20 damage to one Pokemon for a Dark
Energy. The damage cannot be increased or lessened (or
even prevented) by Weakness, Resistance, Powers, Bodies,
or effects on the Pokemon being attacked. A weak sniping
attack but it could be effective in some situations. Too
bad you can't hit Weakness on the defending Pokemon.
The second attack, which is more interesting, is
called... wait for it... DOOM NEWS. LOL! Most people
preferred Message of Ruin, but this is just funny!
...Ahem. For 3 energies (2 with Energy Gain), one which
must be Dark, Doom News has you return all energy
attached to Absol G to your hand (could be useful in
some situations) and the Defending Pokemon (the one hit
with this attack) is KOed at the end of the turn. It
would be a nice attack if there weren't so many ways
around it. The opponent could simply retreat, use
Switch/Warp Point/Warp Energy, Poke Turn (if it's an
SP), or even evolve or Level Up the Defending Pokemon.
The only reason a person would use Doom News is to force
a switch if other means are not available. But then why
would you need such a fragile Pokemon as Absol G to do
it? I love the attack name, but the attack itself...
nah.
Hmm... Well, there is a combo, but it's pretty
unreliable at best. You know Dialga LV. X? Yes, the same
one that comes in those tins. If your opponent pulls off
an unsuccessful Time Skip, then he/she can't do a thing
next turn except draw and end. Meaning they won't have a
chance to switch out their Pokemon. You can try it if
you're really daring, but it's only a 25% chance of it
actually working. Or you could combo it with Ariados,
which makes all Pokemon pay an energy more to retreat.
Ratings:
Modified: 2/5 For this guy to have a LV. X, it's the
only thing that's really good about this card. Don't
bring it up unless you're doing to level it up.
Limited: 3/5 If you pull the LV. X and this card, you're
doing to play it. Pokemon will have to waste precious
energy to retreat here if they can, but power it up on
the bench.
This is Steel_Winger, until next time!
