Golem 4
A Golem that isn’t completely horrible? What were they
thinking?
Yep, Golem 4 has the typical attributes of Golem cards
in the TCG. High HP, very expensive attacks and a
Retreat Cost that makes you cry.
So why isn’t it completely horrible, then? Well for a
start, being an SP Pokémon mitigates some of downsides:
Energy Gain lowers the attack cost, and Poke Turn can be
used rather than paying to Retreat. Secondly, although
the attacks are overcosted, they do actually hit quite
hard, and can work together with other cards in the set
to make them effective.
The obvious combo is with Luxray GL LV X, whose Flash
Impact attack does 30 damage to one of your benched
Pokémon. Now you could choose to negate that damage with
a benched Manectic PL or Quagsire SP, OR, you could
chose to do it to Golem 4 and power up its Rage attack.
Sure, it most likely won’t survive more than a turn, but
that could be enough to get you a key KO on a Pokémon
too big (or too Resistant) for Luxray to handle.
Being a Fighting type is pretty good right now, and
Grass is one of the better weaknesses to have. Golem 4
isn’t a format breaking card by any means, and I don’t
suppose it will see much, if any, tournament play, but
for what it is . . . it’s ok.
