Ponyta Lv 17
Today we look at another shiny from
the new set. By now you have probably realized that
being a shiny means a card isn’t going to be massively
playable.
Just as with yesterday’s shiny Shinx,
Ponyta’s playability depends on the existence of
tournament viable evolutions, and how it stacks up
compared to other available Ponytas.
Unfortunately, as far as playable
Rapidash go, the best that Modified has to offer is the
one from the new set with the PokeBody that blocks
effects and damage from SP Pokémon (sort of like a poor
man’s Mewtwo LV X that can’t stop non-SP Basics and has
rubbish attacks). That Rapidash might see some play in
Charizard AR decks, but even that is doubtful.
Like the shiny Shinx, Ponyta has the
Star Barrier PokeBody and a fairly useless attack (50
for [R][R] and discard all Energy). Also like the Shinx,
it has a more playable version of itself in the same
set. The uncommon Ponyta Lv 8 has less HP than the shiny
version, but it also has an Ascension attack which lets
you search your deck for Rapidash and evolve it.
Assuming you actually wanted to play Rapidash, this
would undoubtedly be your choice of Basic.
Rating
Modified: 1 (Lack of good evolutions,
better alternatives)
Limited: 1.5 (Rapidash is playable
here, so if you don’t pull Ascension Ponyta, you may as
well use this)
