Alomomola #38/114 (Black and White)

For the rest of the week we are exclusively reviewing Alomomola, the Pokémon whose name is as much of a pain to type as it is to try and pronounce (it’s also a palindrome, if you’re interested). Apparently, Alomomola is based on the Ocean Sunfish, which is one of the very few real life creatures that actually looks weirder than most Pokémon. Go look it up on Wikipedia and see.

Anyway, this version has 100 HP which seems amazing for a non-SP Basic . . . until you remember that Zekrom and Reshiram exist. Even so, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Neither the Weakness, nor the slightly heavy Retreat cost are going to take anyone by surprise.

The attacks are a different matter. They are, to put it simply, very, very lame. Pound needs two Colourless Energy for vanilla 20 and is a waste of whatever you used to pay for the attack cost, while Wave Splash only adds insult to injury by demanding that you use FOUR Energy (two Water, two Colourless) for an effect-free 60 damage. How utterly underwhelming.

When it comes to modified, this card should never see the light of day. In limited, I suppose it can function as a semi-decent wall until Zekrom, Galvantula, or Zebstrika come along and KO it. Apart from the HP though, this is simply a bad card. Tomorrow’s will be better, I promise.

Rating

Modified (HGSS-on): 1.25 (a poor excuse for a tanking Basic Pokémon)

Limited: 2 (eh . . . could buy you a couple of turns I suppose)

Alomomola 38/114 (Black & White)

Hello Pojo readers, sorry about my tardiness. Hopefully you will think this review was worth the wait.

Sadly, Alomomola is not a card worth getting excited about. This is a Water type non-evolving Basic with 100 HP, Lightning weakness, a retreat cost of 2 and two attacks.

The HP is lovely, although between SP Poke'mon and the B&W Dragon Twins of Doom we've seen better. The weakness is expected and painful as is the retreat cost (but I suppose big fish don't move all that fast), so you had best hope that you don't face any Lightning types or get hit with nasty bonus effects (Special Conditions, et cetera) that will ruin your day.

The first attack is Pound, which for [c][c] deals a vanilla 20 damage. The damage-to-energy ratio is too low for tournament play, so it all comes down to the other attack to keep Alomomola out of the binder.

Too bad that Wave Splash is just more of the same. 60 effect-free damage for [w][w][c][c] is terribly overpriced, so this card is doomed.

Alomomola is an absolute piece of trash, but you probably already knew that. At least it's pretty though.

Modified: 1.5 (I'd play Magikarp before I would use this fish-out-of-water)

Limited: 2 (the HP means you can absorb a few hits, but don't bother building to attack with Zekrom around)
