Alomomola
#38/114 (Black and White)
For the rest of the week we are exclusively reviewing
Alomomola, the Pokémon whose
name is as much of a pain to type as it is to try and
pronounce (it’s also a palindrome, if you’re
interested). Apparently, Alomomola
is based on the Ocean Sunfish, which is one of the very
few real life creatures that actually
looks weirder than most
Pokémon. Go look it up on Wikipedia and see.
Anyway, this version has 100 HP which seems amazing for
a non-SP Basic . . . until you remember that
Zekrom and
Reshiram exist. Even so,
it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Neither the Weakness, nor
the slightly heavy Retreat cost are
going to take anyone by surprise.
The attacks are a different matter. They are, to put it
simply, very, very lame. Pound needs two Colourless
Energy for vanilla 20 and is a waste of whatever you
used to pay for the attack cost, while Wave Splash only
adds insult to injury by demanding that you use FOUR
Energy (two Water, two Colourless) for an effect-free 60
damage. How utterly underwhelming.
When it comes to modified, this card should never see
the light of day. In limited, I suppose it can function
as a semi-decent wall until Zekrom,
Galvantula, or
Zebstrika come along and KO
it. Apart from the HP though, this is simply a bad card.
Tomorrow’s will be better, I
promise.
Rating
Modified (HGSS-on): 1.25 (a poor excuse for a tanking
Basic Pokémon)
Limited: 2 (eh . . . could buy you a couple of turns I
suppose)
