Unown ? (Legends Awakened)

Our final Unown of the week features a not-terrible (and cost free!) discard/draw attack and another weird PokePower with a punctuation mark for a name.

The ‘?’ Power reminds me of those crazy old Blaine’s Quiz cards (wasn’t there one where you had to guess the length of a Pokémon? That’s just mental). You put a Pokémon face down and your opponent has to guess what Type it is. If they guess wrong, then you draw a card.

Ok, so there’s no drawback if they get it right, but would you really want to waste deck and Bench space on this card? I mean, a lot of the time it won’t work (alert players will have a pretty decent idea of what you have in your hand after following your searches and your plays), and even if it does, that one card could have been more easily and more certainly got with Unown R or even something like Dodrio SV (which no-one even plays).

It’s fun to use, and I vaguely remember having some success with it at a prerelease (where it is much harder for your opponent to predict what you have) but competitively? Nah, stick with Unown R/Rescue.

3/18/10: Unown ?(Legends Awakened)

We finish up Unown week with what is one of my favorite cards of all time. Not favorite Unowns, favorite cards.

And why would I like this card, you ask? In one word: mindgames.

With Unown ?, you can make your opponent guess the type of a Pokemon in your hand. If they guess wrong, you get to draw a card. It's not a great effect, but personally, I love the idea that just gaining card advantage requires a game within a game. It's not the most imaginative card ever designed, but it's still pretty clever.

Let me get this card's chances in Modified out of the way: Don't use it. There's better draw engines, even if you somehow outwit your opponent multiple times. It's just not consistent, and its effect still isn't justified.

Still, if you need a draw engine for a casual deck? One that plays multiple types of Pokemon? Then I heartily recommend this card.
